As a result of the new legislation passed by ASWC Senators on February 14, student government will be a little different and a lot more efficient. Senators and over 100 Westminster students voted to pass the bill that will open the offices of Clubs and Organization's Chair and Attorney General and add the appointed position of Information Technology Manager to student government. Drafted by Senator Krystal Powell, the bill will change ASWC's constitution by adding new positions and new responsibilities to old positions. This change filled "two basic needs" that ASWC president Scott Terry and the senators saw as tCjiiiv ! Adding an IT manager who maintains web pages and keeps records coincides with the responsibilities of the secretary, thus eliminating the need for a secretary. The new IT manager will assume the role of computer technician and secretary balancing out the offices of student government once more. This, according to Terry, helps keep the size of student government down while building its efficiency. Terry is excited about these changes because they will "open up two new opportunities for students to get involved." More opportunities in student are hoped to bring more diversity to government pressing the need for an official club advisor and the need for an IT manager. Until now. Attorney General Heidee Lund was the advisor of the clubs. Next year, an elected Clubs and Organizations Chair will serve this function leaving the Attorney General free to pursue other responsibil ities. ASWC's new Clubs ana Organization's chairperson will be part of the Executive Powers of student government. Even the position of Attorney General will be affected by the new legislation making it an elected position. The duties of the Attorney General will not change except for the responsibilities lifted by the Clubs and Organizations Chair. The Parlimentarian, will be eliminated and ASWC rules will be interpreted by a designated senator. A shelf will be added to ASWC's Executive Cabinet when the appointed position of IT manager is filled for next year. The new IT manager's responsibilities include, maintaining ASWC and club web For more details on the new changes and election information, students can visit ASWC's Elections 2000 web site at http: ripple, wcslc.edu student aswcE2000.n Construction Improvements Planned For Shaw Center ! ! By Amanda Shiner j Staff Writer I An interview room for the Career Center? Bigger office space for the people in the Student Life Offices? Wider variety of food served with a little spice? More room for the bookstore to sell more than just books? The above improvements are all included in the preliminary plans for the rebuilding or Shaw. Stephen Morgan the Executive Vice President spoke of Shaw (in a good way) as being "organized chaos." He said, "There will be game machines and more televisions. It will be a place that creates activity and fun. It needs to be a comfortable place where students feel like it is their space." The decision to rebuild Shaw was not the idea of one individual. It has been brought about by a mixture of complaints, suggestions, ideas and visions. Follett's bookstore wants more space to increase their inventory, especially in the items. area of Last year they did a million dollars in sales. There is a real need to fix up the ASWC offices, the Career Center and the Student Life offices. Sodexho Marriott food services want to increase the variety of food they serve. They have a desire to do some display cooking like Benihana's. The students have asked for longer hours from Sodexho, with a need for more seating and flexibility. The need to rebuild Shaw is also a part of the master plan in the building and remolding of Westminster's campus. When the decision was made to build more housing units, it was common knowledge that something would have to be done with Shaw. Much of these changes have come due to the changing student body. Morgan who is basically in non-textboo- I j ; I ; j f J ; I ! There are about 450 students currently living on campus. The administration has listened to and done their best to see the needs of the students. When asked how much the project will cost and where the money is coming from, Morgan spoke of who will fund the rebuilding. The budget for the rebuilding of Shaw is set at one million dollars. Sodehxo and Follett bookstore have both stepped up to help with the cost. They have both made significant commitments. The college funds will also help to supplement the cost of this project. Morgan also said, "The See Shaw Center, page 4 |
