Somehow, these methods are not enough to influence Westminster students to vote for mayor. Even the mayoral candidates themselves coming to Westminster hasn't sparked voting interest for most students. Two thirds of 60 students surveyed said that they are registered to vote but what good does this do if they don't even loiow anything about the election? At least 53 of the 60 students knew that there, in fact, is an election going on. However, most students did not know the specifics of when to vote, or even who the candidates are. Some students didn't even know that the primary elections have already passed. Westminster students can be broken down into three groups when the mayoral election is concerned: those who are on top of things, those who are to the side of things and those who are outside of things. Of all the students surveyed, 36 knew that the candidates are Rocky Anderson and Stuart Reid. Knowing who the candidates are doesn't nelp if students don't know when to vote for them or if students don't plan on voting for them. Almost half of the students said that they didn't know when the general election is and only 26 out of the 60 said that they plan to vote in the general election on November 2. The students who are said that they knew a considerable amount about the candidates. However, most of the other 40 students said that they had little or no knowledge about the candidates. Although there is quite a difference among Westminster students when voting is concerned, a few similarities in tneir answers did occur. Television was the most frequently named source of information among the entire 60 students. Almost all of the students polled said that they didn't think TV, radio and newspapers gave them sufficient information about the candidates. However, more of the students named the a source that as newspaper educated them about the candidates. The students who read the newspaper felt better about their mayoral knowledge than the students who saw TV ads. Students who really want information about mayoral candidates are more willing to pick up a newspaper and read about them rather than relying on TV and radio If most conventional sources do not provide adequate information to voters, students still have access to information that will help them to become educated voters. Student Katy Brady says that "if you take the time to read the information provided," . students can find enough resources. It seems that most students just aren't taking an active interest in voting. Either they know about the candidates and plan to make a change, or they know very little and don't care about who will be mayor. "The apathy of our voting age is sau. Sad and scary, says Freshman Gail Jessen. "There are isolated exceptions but, overall, we need to stand up and start making a difference." An attitude like this was rare among all 60 students polled. It's easy to say "I don't care," or to bad mouth politicians, which most students are quick to do, but almost everyone in college has the right to vote. From the results of the students surveyed, it's apparent that more Westminster students would rather stay to the side of things ratner than on top of things. r -- (I tut n |
