Show Wednesday January 24 1996 Campus News New Lilbranry Takes Advantage of Cutting Edge Technology by Tim Haran Forum staff writer Westminsters square-foo- t, three-leve- l, 47,000 $14 million Giovale Library is scheduled to begin ground- breaking the second week of March, according to instructor Bill Bynum, chair of the library committee. David Hales, director of the library, said the construction of the building is being put out for bids soon ana completion is scheduled for June of 1997. This is an exciting phase in Westminster history, Hales said. The library will help connect students and faculty with the world. The new library will consist of individual study areas, a complete computer lab and a media area in which presentations will be shown and help will be given about the new technology. According to Bynum, current holdings will be enhanced and expanded; online services ana computer access will be readily available and computer services will be housed in the new library. The library has recommended that the college shift over to the Library of Congress classification system from the current Dewey Decimal system, Bynum said. This will put us more in line with other academic institutions and facilitate cooperation with other libraries. The increase in space will also require increased staff. According to Hales, the current staff is excited about the technological change and an increased staff will be available to help students. said that Bynum Westminsters library staff is very active in tne Utah Academic Library Consortium. Through this consortium, Utahs academic libraries can better share resources. There are plans for a state-wid- e computerized library system to facilitate between the cooperation libraries, said Bynum. I advise students not to wait until the new library is ready to start using the current library, Bynum said. The library staff is very willing to assist and help students. According to Michael Markowski, assistant professor of history, space is a major problem in the existing library. There is just not enough room to house the information that a college library needs to have. We dont want to have to rely on the U University of Markowski library, said. We also want to build a building that will be attractive to students. Faculty members have been invited to give input as to what books the new library will include, according to The faculty is Markowski. excited about the new very said. The Forum Want Experience? Do an Internship by Carrie Price Forum staff writer One way to get experience in your major, before you graduate, is to get an internship through Westminster. You can get up to 12 hours credit, depending on your major. It is critical that students get experience before graduation, said Betsy Campbell, the director of cooperative education. It makes it seem less scary out there. Youre asking yourself, How can I sign up for one? Before you get too excited about credit, though, there are a few provisos you should be aware of. First, you have to be a junior or a senior; if youre a transfer or MBA student, you must have completed 15 hours at Westminster. You also have to have a GPA of at least 2.5. Last, your internship does not have to do with your major, however, you must have completed some course work in the subject area. For example, if you were majoring in psychology and you got an internship at an accounting firm (it could happen!) you would have to have taken some accounting classes. A letter grade is determined by Campbell, based on the employers final evaluation and the final paper you must turn in to your faculty supervisor at the end of the semester. Internships are not required in any major except Communication, but Campbell recommends .one, for everyone, and if possible, more than one. They are offered during summer, fall and spring semesters. Some really interesting internships weve had, have been at Tracy Aviary, the Salt Lake Olympic Committee, KUTV and the Utah Museum of Natural History, Campbell said. Employers want Westminster , . students as interns. Before you start looking for your internship, you need to take a series of workshops offered by the Career Resource Center and Campbell. The workshops help you find an internship suited to your needs, brush up your interviewing skills, develop those networking skills we all need and love so much, and perfect your resume. Internships help students get excellent, practical experience and gain confidence, Campbell added. It helps you decide on your major; its good to find out if you like the field before you have the job. Dorm Students Return d to . . .
