Mail Resume to: marketing Mexico and the Mosquito Coast by Carrie Price Forum staff writer For many students, taking May Term means taking yet more classes to add to your credit hours, or it could mean an extra enjoyable month of summer. However, for those students who elect to do so, May Term means taking trips to various places around the world. One trip last May Term was the Mexico and the Mosquito Coast trip led by Drs. Robert Ford, Ty Harrison and Brent Eager. The trip focused on different aspects of Mexico, including biology, Spanish and business. The trip was worth four credits, which could be used to meet credit hour requirements in the following major programs: biology, Spanish, honors program, anthrpology, nursing or international business. This led to a very diverse class. There were four biology students, four Spanish students and four international business students, three of whom were graduate students. The cost of the trip was approximately $2,250 and included travel costs, meals, lodging and most fees. Each student had to keep a daily journal, as well as collect additional information and ideas in their specialized areas; for example, the biology students had to collect different species of plants. We focused on geographical, historical and economical aspects, Ford said. We experienced it in an way. The purpose was to attain a perspective on the whole region of Middle America. This small group of Westminster students and faculty visited a lot of the mainstream tourist attraction sites, as well as school-sponsor- brj Giacomo Puccini The Worlds Most Beloved Opera A flickering' candle oveuj woman in the moonlight The devotion of friends The frailtij of love Suruin Oct. 14, 6, 1 Tickets 1 8, 20, It.iluin with tr.nliTi 995-7'- at Alhertsonb Supertitles p.m. & Oct. Such places included the Aztec ruins near Mexico City, Cathedrals in Taxco, Zapotec ruins in Oaxaca and Mayan ruins. Problems with scheduling, dealing with the broader culture, eating the food and staying in hotels that werent comparable to the Hilton were considerations the students had to deal with. Part of the learning experience is traveling in the Third World, Ford said. Harrison said he feels that the trip was immensely successful. He said he thinks the most memorable part of the trip was their time on the Bay Islands, 30 miles off the coast of the mainland. They were exposed to all different cultures on the islands: Creole, Caucasian and African-AmericaThey spent time on the coral beaches, snorkeling and soaking up the tropical sun. The students thought it was paradise, he said. This trip will not be offered May Term 1996, however, Ford is trying to get research funds for students to go back to the area to do specialized research. Some proposed trips for next year include a biology department sponsored trip to Africa for a game safari and a trip to Catalina Island, off the coast of California, also sponsored by the biology department. It was almost a opportunity. We celebrated Mexican culture and biology for three weeks, Harrison said. Students are lucky to have this international opportunity. They need to take better advantage of these chances. Travel opportunities need to be encourged. n. once-in-a-lifeti- once-in-a-lifeti- |
