Senate stresses student involvement ASW Brett Boberg Forum Staff Writer by A main concern of the Associated Students of Westminster College (ASWC) this year is to increase involvement and interest among the students. Student involvement at Westminster has struggled in the past, and ASWC would like to get every student involved in campus activities and events, according to ASWC President Jed Arveseth. Theres been problems in the past with apathy, said Arveseth. Not a lot of students showed up to the functions, even when they were well organized and promoted. According to Arveseth, this was due to the lack of school spirit. We think its from the lack of feeling that people are part of their school. Students tend to do the 3 Cs. Students get out of their car, go to class, and go back to their car. Thats a problem we want to eliminate, he said. With such a diversity of students on campus, we want to get activities that everyone will enjoy, Hughes said. Some of the activities that ASWC has planned include a Halloween dance, a spring dance, and a comedy night. Barbecues and bands have also been scheduled throughout the year. ASWC has an Easter planned a carnival a and Christmas egg hunt, for the children of the administration, faculty, and students of Westminster. If people think that things arent going on of interest. In order for us to maintain at least our minimum number of elected officials we need your help. In order to gain some seats its going to take an extraordinary effort on your part, Horiuchi said. The incumbent county commissioner predicted a weird election year due to a sense of discontentment among the population. Rush Limbaugh, G. Gordon Liddy and tabloid journalism have brought discontentment to Americans and its not fair. The economy is the best in decades, buying power is strong and people are doing much better. Unemployment is only 3.1 in Utah and almost anyone who wants a job can have one. We are doing so well that people are looking for other problems. We have to win to nity despite Clintons popularity and the fact that we dont do as well in off year elections. Its scary because this feeling of discontentment is causing people to go conservative or Republican. Weve come a long way and you should be proud to be Democrats, Horiuchi told the club, "because we have a nicer record of people in cans have done a office. Horiuchi lightly criticized President Clinton, saying he was a little conservative but defended the president against the influx of discontentment. Clinton hasnt had the time and opportunity to do what he needs to do. Horiuchi encouraged The Westminster Democr&ts to participate in local campaign activities to aid candidates in the Fall elections and reiterated the importance of I doing everything you can do. do and they are the most humiliating thing you can do.
