Show Tte Westminster College Tuesday, September 15, 1992 - Volume XXXV Issue I Westminster College of Salt Lake City Career Center Face-Li- ft Is More Than .Skin DeepV by Jake Kilgrow Forum staff writer John McMurtry, and MBA sutudent, utilizes new library space in remodeled Career Resource Center while topic hunting. Known before as the rat hole, the newly remodeled Career Resource Center is open and has a totally new image. The remodeling, which took place from June 8 to Aug. 8, included updating the librarys holdings, increasing computer access and architectural changes. Even though the Career Resource Center utilizes the same space, many people comment that it looks bigger, said Karen Despain, director of placement The change in appearance is due to architectural changes. For example, the entrance is now on the north side of the room instead of the west side. There are also additional shelves and new furnishings. The most noticeable improvement is the new lighting system no more rat hole. The additional library holdings and computer access make everything more accessible, said Despain. A major function of the Career Resource Center is to supply literature which helps students find job placement and competition information. The remodeled career center has the space necessary to supply these materials; the rat hole did not. In addition, there is now more literature available on graduate school, internships and fellowships, study skills, labor markets and what to do with your major once you have it. The increased computer access also makes using the Career Resource Center easier. With the Career Resource Center programs now available in the computer lab in Shaw Center instead of only in the Career Resource Center, students have greater access to career information. Despain cited the efforts of past ASWC officers Bruce Lambert, Laura Kennedy, Basil Chelemes, and Vasiliki Katsikathas for providing the initial efforts toward renovation, and also Bill Douglas, plant manager of Deluxe Check Printers, who donated $3000 towards the computers. Students Wanted As Telemarketers For Admissions by Uz Peterson Forum editor With enrollment ever on the increase and hundreds of people inquiring about the college, Craig A. Green, vice president for enrollment management, has devised a plan to supply prospective students with answers. Green will hire four to six Westminster students as telemarketers to make phone calls on behalf of the college. They will further inform people who have already inquired about the college. Presently, the admissions staff returns a portion of the calls received from people who inquire about the college, but with their other duties it is impossible to keep up with the demand. The new positions would be entirely for phone work. Phones will be set up in the enrollment offices in Carleson Hall. Green would like to begin work as soon as possible, tentatively extending from the beginning of October to the end of March. Times are flexible, but he would like up to students working approximately 80 hours a week. Students can work from less than 20 hours up to full time, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, and perhaps even on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Wages will be paid on an hourly basis, $5.50 per hour. Many colleges solicit donations or seek six; enrollment through professional telemarketing operations, but Green prefers to train students. He believes students can give more insight Many students, he said, are Dining For Dollars: Spaghetti Night 1993 by Doug Murray Forum staff writer Casino night, video horse racing and a prize trip to Puerto Vallarta are what the Westminster Alumni Association has planned for the night of September 19, 1992, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. For a $5 donation you can attend the fundraiser, which includes an spaghetti dinner, silent auction, games for the kids, and five chips to play at the casino. Along with these, events, Morris Travel has donated a trip for two to Puerto Vallarta to be given away in a drawing later in the evening. The proceeds from the evenings events will go to a scholarship fund for relatives of alumni who attend Westminster College. Jeannie Smith, president of the Alumni Association and this years event coordinator, stated that this years dinner will be better than ever with the video horse racing, the trip and other prizes. Smith also said that this years goal is to raise close to $20,000. This is possible because so many of the prizes were donated, unlike last year when the alumni association had to purchase most of the prizes.
