Show h Commentary ASWC Officers: What They Don't Know Can't Hurt Them by Bill Kilpack Forumeditor When President Harry S. Truman ran for his second term of office, a prominent newspaper wrongfully reported that he had lost the election to Dewey. It was a major embarrassment to the newspaper. But what would have happened if die election returns had not been public? It would have been the word of those who voted for Truman against the word of those who voted for Dewey. No one could be trusted to be the voice of truth. It would come down to whoever had the biggest stick or the most clout on who came out the winner. In any form of election, it is the numbers that determine the outcome. Who voted for whom, how many abstained, disqualified votes, etc. Without a public record of ballots cast, there is no use in having elections at all. What is to prevent someone in power from putting anyone desired into office? On campus, the ballotretums for ASWC president and vice president are not public. This is wrong, and defeats the whole purpose. It has been said that releasing the actual numbers would hurt the feelings of the candidates. You've gotta be kiddin. Were all big boys and girls at Westminster, arent we ...? Anyone who decides to run for office knew at the onset that only one person would be the winner. Every candidate knew that he or she might come out on the short end of the stick. Its part of the package. In government, the people are the ultimate controlling factor on leaders. They choose the leaders who fit in with their ideals most closely. If they dont follow through, then the people can do something about that, also. That is the most fundamental basis of the Constitution of the United States government by the people, for the people. That raises another question: when is a government becoming oppressive? Hmm .... When is a government abusing its posi il tion? Well, one of the classic indicators is when information directly affecting the people is suppressed. The British shut down the free presses in the American Soviet Union colonies. The monitored all radio and TV transmissions and screened all printed material going in and out of the country. President Richard Nixon suppressed his connection to the Democratic party break-i- n at the Watergate Hotel .... Ponderous .... In the upcoming presidential election, what would happen if it was just declared who won? What if someone simply said, The next president of the United States is Jerry Brown? There had better be some both popular and hard proof of ballots electoral. PresidentBush would wantproof. Tsongas would want proof. The people would want proof. Too grand a scope? OK, look at the U. That was what made it news. But before it even reached that point, don t you think that some people wanted proof that she was actually the peoples choice? Wanting to protect the people in the ASWC election simply doesnt cut it. The students at Westminster have every right to know what the election numbers were. Withholding the information is overstepping the powers of any governmental body, let alone ASWC. When people put themselves in the spotlight, they are opening themselves up for public ridicule and criticism. Its the nature of the beast. A public like a candidate for elected office figure has less rights, pure and simple. Fewer rights to privacy is only the tip of the iceberg. If the candidates are so thin skinned that they need protection from the fruit of their own campaign efforts, then they shouldnt be running for office in the first 00 Dance instruction Tuesday and Saturday 7:30 p.m. 4 I 1 4 f f ' Ton-You- r ' A Service of the Prevention Program A Body FeedEATING DISORDERS ing Upon Itself The following article is provided as a public service by Intermountain Health Care, Wasatch Canyons Hospital Eating Disorders Clinic 265-300- 0. They listened to your problems. The cheap labor (mostly students) currently employed arent interested in hearing about what is going on in and they certainly dont want your life to hear about your problems simply because they have problems of their own to deal with. Barb and Carol had their problems with too, but they could set aside anything they had on their minds long kind of like mothers. enough to listen Hearing that Carol had quit upset me. I found this out by talking to her one day when she had come in to eat lunch with Barb. The way she had explained the situation, management had sent Barbara home for the day 0'ust before the lunch rush), Carol was upset with management for some reason or other to begin with. When lunch rush came, management gave no help to Carol whatsoever. She got so fed up with her situation (and I guess management was harping on her to keep up with the crowd) she walked right into the managers office and quit that same day this was Valentines Day!! Hearing that Barbara had been fired was the last straw for me! I submitted a letter in Sincerely, Chad M. Morishita Junior, mathematics I. f Health place. If this happens, I will be more than willing to go along with this decision. In my opinion, this matter which is turning into a major issue rather quickly quickly should be addressed publicly. I propose that the Forum look into this matter and publish an article. Hopefully, the management of Marriott will come to their senses and do the right thing before they lose sales in a major way!! I dont think management realizes just how many people loved Barb and Carol!! 4 Here's Student Wants Barb And Carol Back Dear Editor: Im sure its no secret anymore that our favorite ladies of the Marriott are no longer employed there. Whats irritating about that is the fact that Carol was forced into for no quitting and Barbara was fired apparent reason. .. The management of Marriott continues to say it was for policy reasons. I have a hard time believing this: management cant sit there and tell the students that after a service of over 15 years Barb was fired for breaking policy?! I believe that Barb and Carol were cut simply for financial reasons; I think the Marriott was looking at reducing the cost of labor. Thats all fine and dandy, but the fact still remains that Barb and Carol were the main reason for eating at the Marriott. Personally, their food isnt the great Barb and Carol were friends to everybody that walked through the door. Why would a young woman get herself into such a state? The answer is complex. Thin is in young women are bombarded by media standards for physical beauty, peer pressure is intense to maintain this standard.
