Show Campu Positions Presidential ASWC For Contest Candidates Four byLynette Rundell Forum staff writer Campaigning is underway for the four students running for ASWC president and vice president ASWC president candidates are Tonya Garreaud, ASWC secretary and arts and sciences senator, and Ed Koester, business candidates are Beth senator. Ann Muraski, arts and sciences senator, and Julie Wamick, ASWC parliamentarian and social sciences senator. Vice-preside- nt Only 12 of the 22 Senate positions were applied for. No Senator campaigning will be necessary this year, said ASWC Vice President Jeff Swanson, elections chairman. Swanson said, Everyone running for senator is guaranteed a place in the Senate. Theyre uncontested. He said there are still 10 Senate positions open. Next year, students wishing to become a senator must notify a current senator or officer and from there, voting action will be done during Senate meetings, Swan son said. Because of the slow responses from students wanting to run for office, Swanson extended the application deadline 24 hours. He said he was glad he did so because six more applications came in, bringing the number of Senate candidates to 12. Swanson said he was impressed for this years turnout. Although, there have been more students running for office in the past." Swanson said election booths will be located in the Shaw Center on March 17 and 18 from 9 a.m.-- 5 p.m. To accommodate night students, the booths will be located in Gore on Tuesday from 5-- 8 p.m. and in Converse on Wednesday from 8 5-- p.m. Essay responses from the president and candidates are printed in this issue of Forum. They are printed as they were submitted to the Forum Office, without editing to make it as fair to each candidate as possible, said Bill Kilpack, Forum editor. vice-preside- nt "What Motivates You To Be An Executive Officer And What Changes Would You Like To Make?" i I tvpeilifoi, Ed Koester Beth Ann Muraski What motivates me to be ASWC Vice President, is the challenge to provide a wide range of successful activities that will improve the college experience of every Westminster student. I also know that I can increase the student body representation regarding student affairs. I feel that ASWC should be able to locate and provide for the students needs, ideas, and activities that will enhance their college experience. I feel that 1 can accomplish these goals. I have served as the chiar of the Childrens Christmas Carnival, Easter Egg Hunt, Oblique Games, and Spring Fling and have been an active member of SAC for the past two years. As we know Westminster is a very diversified campus with single parents as well as couples. If the children of these people were to be tended while their parents were at the activities, they would be more likely to come. In my experience as publicity chair, I have found that ASWC should have more activities as that appeal to the MBA, well as the traditional students. I also feel that I will be able to make some changes to integrate the Nursing, Aviation and Business students, by basically appealing to the whole student txxly and making them feel that they are a part of Westminster College. Each of these positions has presented me with valuable learning experiences as will the office of President. I would like the opportunity to bring what I see is needed and. wanted to this office leading to a more powerful interaction between student government and the students. There are many students who run for office that do so in order to improve their chances of getting a job or being accepted into graduate school. I will admit that being ASWC President will enhance my rdsumd and vita; however, it is not the factor that motivates me. My motivation stems from a desire to be an instrument for progress through an open communication between the many facets of the college. I do not want to change anything; I want to create and explore new and already existing possibilities. Taking the political energy that is already in existence, and using that energy for addressing student issues creates a possibility for a different kind of interaction between students, student government and the administration.
