Show IHC Financial Aid Available to Annual Autumn Aloft Presents Hot Air Balloon Exhibition in Park City Students Nursing available is Financial to now students entering their final year of nursing school, through a new program offered by Intermountain Health Care (IHC). Under the RN Education Assistance Program, up help by Christopher Madding Forum staff writer r A sunrise of 25 colorful balloons ascended into the cool morning skies of Park City at this years Eighth Annual Autumn Aloft. The spectacular event took place' on the course of Park Meadows Country Club Sept.14-16- . For those who are willing to drag themselves from sleep before the sun even begins to light the sky, Autumn Aloft is a kaleidoscope of colors and wonder for all ages. The morning of Sept. 14 offered a clear sky and gentle winds which guided the balloons over the lakes and the fairways of Park Meadows. The balloons reflections in the water, with the mountain range as the backdrop, was reward enough for the sacrifice of sleep made the night before. While watching the balloons, many do not realize that a competition is taking place. Actually, there are different events each day. The festival begins with the hare and hounds competition, where one balloon takes off ten minutes before the others. While in flight, the hare, or first balloon, finds a clearing and places an X on the ground. The hound balloons then attempt to drop a marker on the X, the closest drop wins. On the second day the most colorful event for the spectators takes place, the splash and dash. In this game, the pilots objective is to touch the balloons basket to the surface of as many targeted lakes as possible. The balloon with the most touch- downs wins. This event is most dramatic for the public because of the continual ascending and descending of the balloons. The final day brings the key grab. In event this a pole is erected with a set of keys attached to the top. The pilot attempts to maneuver the balloon close enough to the pole to grab the keys from atop. Of all the events, this one requires the most skill and precision. Thepilotmust not only avoid hitting the pole while attempting to grab the keys, but also avoid mid-ai- r collisions with other balloonists. 25-fo- ot ' to $2,000in financial assistance is available to qualified students who agree to work for an IHC hospital or facility upon graduation. The RN Education Assistance Program is designed to provide financial assistance to qualified students in their senior year of an ADN or BSN program. In exhange for the $2,000, the student agrees to work fulltime for an IHC facility for a period equivalent to one year. These games the pilots play measure follows the craft in a ground vehicle to skill more than speed. With the wind and retrieve it after the final decent, hot air as the only forms of control, much Many questions arise in conversation skill is required for pilots to maneuver their concerning ballooning. One of the most crafts through the various staged events. frequently asked is, How safe is The pilots abilities are tested in their ballooning? As in all sports there is an selection of an altitude with the proper acceptable risk to personal safety. If a wind currents to take them to the desired balloon is forced into making a fast or hard target area. Those arriving early enough landing one might receive bruises, or on may notice the balloonmeister, master of rare occasions, strained or even broken ceremonies, releasing smaller toy balloons, This is done to test wind currents at different altitudes. As one might imagine, wind currents level may be blowing in a at ground completely opposite direction than those at 3,000 feet. This makes it possible, in many cases, and especially in Park City, for a balloon to return to its original launch site, Although it is possible for balloons to end their venture at their point of departure, this not always the case. With this in mind, all balloonists, or aeronauts, have a chase crew as part of their team. The chase crew (the unit that burns propane gas to heat the air which keeps the balloon aloft), goes out and cannot be reignited? Fortunately, in such cases, the balloon acts as a parachute and descends at about the same rate. This may not be the most comfortable landing, but it certainly is not as harsh as one might imagine. Through the skills of the pilots, ballooning holds fast to a good safety record, s and rarely any with gentle recorded injuries. If you are planning to view from the ground or ascend to the heavens, Autumn Aloft is an event not to be missed by the outdoor adventurist. Balloon rides may be arranged if one contacts the board of directors early. If you get the opportunity to go on a balloon ride dont let it pass you by. A flight in a balloon is an experience not to be missed, and there is no better place to do it than Park City. The feeling of being suspended over the green mountains and the golden valley in the cool of the morning is unforgettable. Autumn Aloft 1991. will be held on Sept. 13, 14 and 15.
