Show Ninth Annual Lecture Series Opens Oct. The Weldon J. Taylor Lecture Series of Westminster College has announced its season. Thisyearis speakers for the 1990-9will series present eight distinguished executive speakers who will discuss current management issues. The series opens on Oct. 17, with the lecture Building Your Team," by Susan Mooney, president and chief operating officer for Daw Technologies Inc., of Salt Lake City- Mooney was named one of the top five corporate women of 1988 by Utah 1 - Legal Assistant Program Receives Accreditation Business Mmrnzine. On Tuesday, Nov, 13, Shanti Mehta, with W.L. Gore and Associates, Inc., will lecture on Bill Gore and His Financial Precepts." The series continues on Jan, 24, with a panel of women executives including Linda A. Galindo, vice president of Innovations Consulting, Inc.; Joan Woodard, Ph.D., director ofenvironmental and manufacturing research and development, Sandia National Laboratories and Connie Romboy, owner of the Career Guidance Center. The lecture series is free to the public and all lectures will be held in Gore School of Business Auditorium, beginning at the Associated Students of The Westminster College Legal Assis-taProgram has been granted final accreditation from the American Bar Association (ABA) House of Delegates. The August announcement came from Sibul Gelbert Esq. who was named Program Manager of the program in July. The eleven month evening program which admits students twice a year in January and September, trainslegal assistants to work under the supervision of an attorney. Governors States Flicker announced he has developed a computer voice mail program he calls telequiz that allows students to take tests over the telephone. Flicker said his students are fascinated the system, which will allow professors by to record a maximum of 30 questions with truefalsa or multiple-choicanswers. Students answer questions by pressing buttons on touch-tonphones. A professor can also set up a system to give an oral essay exam, Flicker said. When asked about the possibility of students cheating, Fricker said, I believe there would be no more cheating with this system than with any other, Students e e The Career Corner is brought to you by the Career Resource Center . We will also continue to use this column to disseminate information about jobs, internships, and other career related issues. Expanded services will be provided this year for all students of Westminster College. Starting this Fall, Peer Career Counselors will be working in the Career Center. These counselors will be available to help students prepare for their job search, to provide assistance with utilizing library and other resources, and to answer questions regarding and job opportunities. Schedules will be posted on the Career Resources Bulletin Board throughout campus. Students who will be graduating within a year or who have completed 15 hours in their graduate program can register for career services with Karen Despain. These students should register as soon as possible to avail themselves of all services, ie. on campus interviewing, networking opportunities, and job development. The office hours will be expanded this year to include evening hours. A new schedule will be posted on all job boards, as well as specific information regarding registration for the Career Center. While Fricker was jntroducinghis new software in Illinois, two chemistry professors from McGill University in Montreal prepared to announce that they have two computer programs that can spot classroom cheaters. The basis for the detection of cheating is the mental fingerprints students leave when they copy from each other, sai d Pavi d Harpp, who worked or) the program with James Hogan. The computer programs compare and test-takin- g consider the probability of pairs of students getting the same answers." Harpp said. Answer sheets of all pairs of students are checked, and those with a predefined number of differences in their papers are flagged. In every case he looked at, Harpp said, the suspected students sat close to each other in the exam room. Harpp said that cheating on multiple-choic- e exams was completely eliminated when students were seated randomly and or different versions of the test were handed out.
