Show Organizations Unite over Abortion Issue Letter to the Editor the Editor: On Jan. 9, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to review an Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals decision striking down a Missouri statute which defined life as beginning at the moment of conception. In this case, the Court will likely revisit its 1973 landmark Roe v. Wade decision which recognized a womans right to control her own body, legalizing abortion throughout the country. To a significant majority of this nations citizens, the concept of illegal abortion is atavistic, harkening back to a time of back-alle- y abortionists and by coat hanger. Yet, in its recent action the Court has raised the specter of a return to those days, days when up to 720,000 illegal abortions occurred annually in this nation, and where as many as 17,000 deaths resulted every To sclf-mutllati- year. It has been 16 years since those statistics were relevant. Sadly, they are relevant once again. statistics and the like are wholly irrelevant. That exhortation, however, is an expression to travel to a state or country where abortion Is legal. We already face- a crisis in this countiy, in that one in every four children born Is raised in poverty. Are we as Americans willing to exacerbate that problem, to worsen the odds for our progeny? Since 1973, 20 million American women have had legal abortions. What would our poverty statistics look like if each of those women had been forced to give birth? Moreover, how, would our community social service resources, already stretched to their limit, handle this For it would be increased burden? incumbent upon a community which prohibits abortion to provide food, housing, medical care and education for the resulting children. The undersigned organizations are committed to maintaining reproductive freedom for the women of Utah.
