Another Choice? By Ron Farnsworth Do Americans have real freedom when It comes to choosing political y leaders, or has the system done away with the dream that anyone can grow up to be the president of the United States? Dob Waldrop, state chairman of the Libertarian Party, is upset that people are being denied a choice. "The media seem to have already decided that there are only two parties In this country, which is only one more than in the Soviet Union," Waldrop said, "the United States is the only western democracy where the two largest political parties are allowed to rig two-part- election events to exclude the competition." Perhaps the greatest loss of voting freedom Americans will suffer has occurred because of the media earlier this month, The Denver Post" ran a story about the restrictions of the newly formed National Election Service. The NES was created Jointly by ABC, NBC and CBS to report this year's election results. Votes cast for the Republican and Democratic candidates will be totaled using some very new and highly sophisticated form of math that will make these totals reflect 100 percent of the votes cast t For the Libertarian Party, this omission represents a major blow to their efforts. "We are really upset about the media coverage that we dont get," said. "When we do get it, it seems Waldrop to really sensationalize our ideas and treat us as kooks." Soon after the turn of the most of the state legislatures in thiscentury, country began to pass laws that restricted access to the ballots to all but Republican or Democratic candidates. Some states have minimal requirements in order for minority party candidates to be listed. Utah, for example, only requires 500 signatures on a petition. Other states require a more moderate number of signatures, usually between 1000 to 5000. The remaining states have requirements that can be quite restrictive. Oregon. Missouri and North Carolina are examples of small population centers with disproportionately signature These requirements range from 35,000 to over 50,000 signatures needed. Our neighbor, Idaho, with a population slightly larger than an average Mormon family, requires 8.0000 on petition before they will signatures allow a candidate to appear on the ballot. The reason there is not a viable third party is because the Democrats and Republicans actively and legally discourage It, said Waldrop. The Libertarian Party is the only third party option to appear on a national scale (47 out of 50 state ballots). Waldrop feels it is time for fairness in the electoral process; cither do away with the requirements.
