Show news Christmas Breah Leaves Most Traditional Shoppers Broke r by Peter Gallagher i i The Christmas season is in full swing with the end of the Thanksgiving weekend. Christmas is full of family feasts, vacation time and giving. For the traditional college student the Christmas holidays and finding money to give presents to the people they care about can be very stressful. College students have a rough time throughout the year managing their funds, but around Christmas the flow of cash in a students pocket can get especially tight Westminster student Jean Cottrell is in the typical dilemma. I have a lot of friends to buy gifts for, not to mention my family, she said. Most students seem to find the means to purchase gifts for everybody on their lists. Some students are forced to get part time jobs in November, other students. get more creative and find somebody who will loan them money until the new year. Some students dont have a lot of people to shop for, but their pockets can be emptied as - V UT A H fast, if not faster, than the student with a long list. I have a girlfriend and I want to get her something really special this Christmas, said freshman student Ray Tanner. Buying a boyfriend or girlfriend a ring or a holiday trip can break a students budget real fast, but many students find a way to purchase these expensive gifts for the special people in their lives. My girlfriends present comes first, said Tanner. I dont know what Ill get her yet but I dont think Ill have much money left over." Christmas shopping can be a battle of crowds, cars and long lines, but most students get in the spirit and welcome the challenge. Christmas shopping usually leaves me broke, but it makes me feel good to give to others, said Cottrell. The break from school in December leaves the traditional student broke, but it seems the Christmas fever gets the students ready to start a new semester and a new year (so they can try to save money for the next years shopping spree at the end of December).
