There is nothing that can quite match the feeling one gets when the person behind them spits. Nor is it easy for a professor to top hisher own pause for effect when it is filled with the rich sounds of someone expectorating on a continuing basis. By law in the state of Utah, one is not per mitted to smoke cigarettes in public places, except in designated areas. This principle holds true in the majority of Westminster classrooms. Even with the denial of smoking rights, though, there are still those who manage to consume the effects of tobacco and its accompaniments. nicotine and tar, by the creative method of placing it between their lower lip and its corresponding gums, which causes the mouth to water and form an interesting mixture of spittle and brown goo. . Having read this far. and probably endured the audible expectoration process in one or more classes, it is expected that for most people enough is enough. letters to the editor Society Pays And Pays significant amount of higher education Editor: According to the Forum of Nov. 14, Dave Goularte, as governor of UIA, believes that the biggest issue is to lobby the legislature to raise taxes for education, in order to take the burden off the students at the expense of the taxpayers. He should know that there is at least one student who disagrees with that stand completely. The common argument for his position is that society stands to benefit from an educated populace: therefore, society should pay. Does he know that society already does pay and pay and pay? Some people dont seem to know that all of the Utah State income tax is allocated to the Uniform School' Fund. Approximately one third of the real estate tax goes to the various school districts, and proceeds for liquor sales are applied to the school lunch program. A large percentage of the sales tax goes to higher education, and contributions make up another . The Forum would like to suggest that an administrative policy be established prohibiting the chewing and spitting of tobacco of any sort in class. Basing a decision on the fact that the smoking of cigarettes is denied because it is offensive to the public at large, the consumption of these other forms of tobacco is equally, if not more, repulsive and should be regulated. If there was a rule clearly stating that dipping" is not allowed within a classroom during class, the handling of the situation could become much easier for all involved. Professors and students could avoid confrontations with individuals who insist on dipping by simply reminding them that theyare breaking the rules: it would not be con- Boutique Parking Infringes Editor, Im writing this letter in regard to the various sales and boutiques that have been tak-in- g revenues. Also, the dippers" would know that they are expected not to partake in class, so they could save themselves the trouble of finding a cup or can or stealing the professors wastebasket in which to "relieve" themselves. The Forum Staff ), Since when do the interests of makingabuck or having a fun little show take precedence over those of the student trying to get to class?! As a result, I went to my class 10 minutes late, and very angry. It wouldnt even have been so bad if there had been a notice in the Forum or posted around ' campus that the lots would be closed, but there wasnt (that I saw). I dont mind when there is something going on around campus that doesnt interest me, Only when it starts to infringe on my right to gp to class and participate, in the prim (try function of this institution do I' get angry. Cant sales and shows such as these be a little bit in more organized with the mind as well? Is the bookstore going to be allowed to rope off parking areas because they want to have a sale on Flair Pens?! I think not. In closing I quote Dr. Popich: An individuals basic rights can be morally exercised only to the point that they dont infringe on the ability of someone else to exercise their rights, and vice versa. Scheen Student Bemoans Educational Gaps To the Editor: I would like to comment on d careers, but our needs ing in to this end vary from the broad based undergraduate requirements of a master of social work program to the relatively specific requirements of clinical psychology, and thereseems to be a multitude of rumors and misunderstandings in these areas. Not only do our needs vary, our ability to communicate our needs varies. If we cannot communicate among ourselves we need to assess carefully how we can communicate with others. Is isencumbenton the student to ensure they know the requirements of future programs they may be contemplating, but a little more help in this area would be most welcome. Perhaps this committee could go some way towards closing this gap by making itself available periodically to address concerns of the students in an atmosphere of honest, open, sharing. For some of us, waiting until our senior year to find we have gaps in our education is to late, and maybe other students can become better informed of their options in time to take appropriate action. Yours very sincerely, Kate Miller people-oriente- the recent article by Dean Baar, published in the last edition of Forum. I am a senior in the psychology program, and for some time have felt the need to make some observations on the program but was not sure how to go about it. I finally decided on the course of action I though was correct and the most appropriate for me, and consequently wrote a memo to Dean Baar. I discussed this action with some members of the faculty and other students, and found they variously viewed me as rightwrong, brave stupid or professionally suicidal. Not only was I was surprised at the range of reactions, but was saddened to find out how many students felt they too had something they would like to share but could not or would not mostly through fear of putting themselves on the line. The social science department has no social communication no club or even reading room like some other departments, so our ability to communicate with each other is fragmented and often misleading.
