The newspapers address is 1840 South 1300 East, Salt Lake City, Utah 84105. The Forum is an award-winnin- g member of the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Press Association. Typsetting and printing by Hoffine Printing, 55 East Malvern, Salt Lake City, Utah 84115, The Forum welcomes letters from students and other readers. Submissions must be signed and include the authors telephone number (telephone numbers will be used only to verify the authenticity of letters). Submissions must also avoid the use of profanity and libel. Lengths may not ex- ceed three typed, double-space- d pages with lines 50 character spaces wide. Deliver letters directly to the Forum office (under the door if necessary) in the basement of Shaw Center by 3 p.m. on Friday one week before the date of publication, or mail them to the Forum office at the above address. Please be concise and to the point in your letters. The ceremony was well attended by students. faculty, staff, board members and members from the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce. President Charles Dick hosted the event Speakers included Salt Lake City Mayor Palmer De Paulis, Fred A. Carleson and Donald P. Lloyd. Dick spoke of the advantages of the new facility and the reasons behind the decision to renovate. He pointed out that Carleson Conference Center is the first new facility on the campus since Nunemaker Place. He added. It represents the academic expansion of our community outreach programs. With the Carleson Conference Center a new era in cooperative education between business, industry, and Westminster College begins. Special thanks were given by Dick to Robert Arnold for his generous leadership gift for the Carleson Conference Center." The family of Cassie Waldo was acknowledged for their gift in her memory. Arnold and Nancy Waldo were present. The Womens Board was also a key benefactor mentioned by Dick. De Paulis also recognized some of the indr--. viduals who contributed to the project. He commended Dick for his perseverance. According to De Paulis, Carleson Conference Center will provide businesses with a place to educate their employees. He added, This is exciting for all of us and for our city. He closed with, Thank you for letting me congratulate you on behalf of the citizens of Salt Lake City. Carleson was pleased to see Carleson Hall put to a more useful purpose. He said, We are privileged to have our name associated with this great new development." Carleson was the spokesman for the Carleson family. Lloyd, chair of the Carleson Conference Committee, quoted figures on the amount of money businesses spend each year on training their employees. Lloyd was instrumental in the search for donations for all the media equipment in the new conference center. He said, I am pleased to be part of this development. The official ribbon cutters included Donald P. Lloyd; Fred A. Carleson; Steven Crane, architect; Robert E. Carleson; Ed Kimball, contractor; Mayor De Paulis: Bob Carleson; and John S. Young, vice chairman of the Board of Directors. The nine cutters shouldered their way towards the ribbon, wielding ornamented scissors. After pausing for the photographers e and a countdown, the ribbon was cut en masse. The Rev. Cheryl Moore, Westminster campus minister, concluded the ceremony with a benediction. Guests were then invited inside to the far east end of the first floor (the old game room) where food and beverages were served. Lorraine Nickerson, president of the Womens Board, and other members of the board were on hand to help with the serving of coffee and hot apple cider. While partaking of the available comestibles, guests could oDserve some of the donated media equipment that was being ' ' : demonstrated. Music for the occasion was provided by a string sextet with a piano accompaniment. One of the instrumentalists was Joan Weiler, payroll clerk. Tours of the transformed Carleson Hall were taken by those in attendance. A familiar comment echoing through the halls was. three-two-on- . TOP: Seconds after the official ribbon is cut. Berenice Jewett Bradshaw, a benefactress of the college, was present. She was overheard saying, Whenever Westminster sets somthing up, they always do it so nice. I Carleson Center staff member, Tammy Hopkins said, Everyone worked very hard to pull this together. Claudene Wilcox, assistant to the president, was in charge of organizing the food and music for the event. Claudia Marques, director of campus sche- duling. said, We (Marques. Richard Brock-myeand the maintenance and grounds crews) were responsible for making sure everything (furniture'carpet, etc.) was here. Marques was pleased with the event. r, Forum 3 |
