Show 1 December 13985 Forum age3 (Collage9 On any given day there are several dozen posters and flyers pasted jo the walls of the main hallway of Shaw Center. If one takes the time to read them, information can be found on special events and speakers on campus, organizations meetings and activities and more. But while Shaw Center is the Student Union Building, few people have the time or inclination to meander through the hallways reading notices. Its just something akin to reading the graffiti on the bathroom walls. This informational collage, combined with student apathy and the fact that some events, activities, meetings, etc. never make it to the postered wails of Shaw Center, quite often results in poor attendance at events and members of the Westminster community finding out about what is occuring on campus after the fact While the Forum staff has no suggestions on what can be done about campus apathy (after all, its basically a subject that no one really cares about) we do think that some things can be done to improve communication. In previous years, the Forum has printed a campus calendar section to announce upcoming events. Information for this section came from the Editor walking up and down the halls with a pencil and paper and writing down information on events that would take place during an issues newsstand life and from event organizers who would submit information far enough in advance to have it typeset, laidout and printed in an issue before the event. The results from this approach were less than hoped for so a Forum reporter was assigned to gather information for the campus calendar. But there was still a problem with getting enough ad vance notice of events to fill a k campus calendar. Near the end of last year announcements of SAGA serving lunch at its usual time for the usual price began appearing to make the calendar more than just a few lines long. This year the campus calendar section was dropped completely from the Forum. This doesnt mean that we dont want to do two-wee- ISiuiir&es Csmnijpuas our part in publicizing campus events, though. The Forum is willing to print announcements that arrive within our copy deadlines (one week prior to publication). We would even consider a campus calendar section if there was enough interest in it But there would still be the problem of events being scheduled after our copy deadline and some members of our campus community not reading the announcements that are printed. We feel that a possible solution to this problem would be for ASWC to place a master calendar in the Shaw Center. This calendar could be patterned similar to theone that is in Bamberger Hall but because of its placement in a heavier traffic area it could be far more Notices of campus events could be placed next to the day that they would occur with a member of student government, the office of campus life or the Dean of Students office responsible for regularly changing the calendar and the posting of notices. A stop at this master calender could alleviate the need to read every poster in Shaw Center and solve some of the timing problems of the Forums publicity of events. And who knows, we may just be able to find out what color the walls in Shaw Center really are. Addressing the problem of publicity should be a priority for event organizers. Effective campus communication is essential if students, faculty and staff are to take full advantage of the events that Westminster has to offer. effective.
