Show December 7, 1984 Forum FageS arts and entertainment producers ran out of money or time because the ending is far inferior to the overall quality of the film. by Floyd B. George The science fiction love story," Billed as John Carpenters Starman is just that and more. It has the mystic of Close Encounter of the Third Kind, the warmth- - of E.T.the and the flavor of The Cavy eman. It even has a chase soto akin Northwest North and spemewhat by cial effects comparable to .An American Werewolf in London. The screenplay by Bruce A. Evans and Raynold Gideon has many touching and humorous moments. It has excellent acting by both Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen. But, unfortunately, it also has some disappointments. The story begins with Voyager II being intercepted by what appears to be a planet but later we discover it is a spaceship.. The aliens accept Voyagers invitation to visit our planet and sends a one man spaceship to Earth. Of course, while approaching Earth NORAD attempts to shoot it down causing the Graft to change course and make a crash landing in Wisconsin. There the alien, played by Jeff Bridges, clones himself into Scott, an earth-ma- n who died a year previous. Scotts widow, played by Karen Allen, and the alien travel from Wisconsin to Arizona so the alien can rendezvous with the mother ship. They are chased by the government which wants to perform an autopsy on the alien while alive . . . no lie. And, of course, the alien will die if he doesnt get there in 3 12 days. Get the picture? It is a simple plot ... too simple. This is the films major drawback. People are tired of big, bad government being the villain in so many recent movies. And in this day and age, why did they drive to Arizona?... they never thought of flying? The story line starts out at a good pace and never lets down until the end this is the second big fault in the film. When the alien is lifted back into its space ship the special effects... well, there are not any, unless you consider snow and colored lights special effects. This is an unforgiveable disappointment which leaves a sour taste. Either the Extra-Terrestri- al cross-countr- John Carpenters last film, The Thing, did not fare well at the box office when released two years ago, but Starman will do much better despite its weaknesses. It has many of the ingredients which draw people to the theaters. The film is well directed and has excellent performances by Bridges and Allen. You never doubt Scott is an alien. The film is full of funny, delightful moments; yet manages to be very sensitive and warm throughout something we have not seen since Poltergeist. Bridges and Allen work beautifully together and are the best thing Starman has going for it The majority of special effects are good; especially the sequence when the alien transforms itself into human form. Charles Martin Smith (Never Cry Wolf and American Graffiti) gives his usual good guy performances and adds credibilitity to his part as a government scientist; but Richard Jaeckels performance as director of Central Intelligence is flat and unbelievable. The movie will survive because of direction and acting despite a weak plot and cheap ending. It is definitely a movie worth seeing this holiday season even if you are not into science fiction; but be prepared for a disappointment or two. A Columbia Pictures production. Rated PG for nudity (tasteful, though) and adult situations. W'ill be released nationally later this month. Movie trivia: Which high budget, science fiction movie scheduled for release this month (having received a lot of media coverage) is proving to be a big disappointment to both critics and movie managers at special preview showings? As one theater manager put it, It may become the first four letter word in the industry to start with D and I dont mean damn. Library Hours Extended The library will be open extra hours during the week of finals. Hours will be Saturday, Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 9, from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., according to Dick Wunder, library direc- tor. . Beierly Hills Cop with Eddie Murphy looks great, as does City Heat with Eastwood and Reynolds. Other than that.
