There are five men on the security staff. They are: Bryan Larsen, Saeed Bonabian, Dave Colhour, Jim Hough, and Art Tanner. Larsen said no women have ever applied for the job. Larsen is the director of the Security Staff and works under the leadership of Richard Brockmyer , director of Campus Life. Larsen makes sure that at least one guard is patrolling the campus 24 hours a day, every day of the light. They do not have police powers and do not make arrests, but will respond to a situation and, if necessary, call the police for assistance. There has never been an assault, a rape or a murder on this campus, said Larsen. Crimes the guards usually handle are broken windows and occasional thefts. They are required to check every door on campus each hour. Leigh Ann Chapman recalled a rainy evening of at Nunemaker when water leakage was causing damage. Campus security was called. They came immediately and were courteous and helpful. They are a very important part of our campus," she year. said. Their duties include locking and unlocking all doors on campus, turning on the safety and outside lights, trying to keep dogs off campus, taking care of traffic and parking problems when they arise and in general helping out however we can, said Larsen. Westminsters security guards are recognizable by their red jackets with Westminster Security written on the back and by the big rings of keys they carry. One ring has over 200 keys and weighs about two pounds. Larsen makes new keys himself, saving money for the College. The security guards do not carry guns. Tanner, who works graveyard shift, carries mace and a flash Larsen said that anytime anyone on campus has a problem, they should feel free to call on the security staff. To call them from a campus phone, dial The caller will hear a regular ring, then a beep, and will have 10 seconds to leave a message. After a short time lapse, the guard will hear a beep and the message will come through on his pager. It is not a real phone and no one will say hello, but an officer will respond in person as soon as possible, said Larsen. Officers get an average of three to five calls per shift, he said. green Westminsters security guards. collegiate camouflage ce play-practi- Betty Christensen Jacques Yvart, French singer, will appear in concert, Tuesday, November 9, at SAGA - Shaw Center 8:00 p.m. Elections Over: Students Still Work The polls are closed, the campaign commercials are over, and the pamphlets, posters and leaflets of our for favorite candidates are being thrown away now. The November 2 election is part of American history. But the ideas of elections, campaigns and candidates are still being discussed in room 313 in Foster Hall at Westminster College. The American Institute of Applied Politics, a old program at career field in politics, is a two-yereceived Westminster. The program special attention this week as Channel 2 visited and talked with some of the participants in this experience. Students interested in an AP major must meet all necessary requirements for a major and work on an actual campaign for six months. Don Holladay, a senior student in the program, has worked in Alaska on a campaign. Jon Butler, who has had previous experience with politics said, I have learned more about how to run a campaign in this program than in all my past experience. According to Roger Bailey, a senior student, AP is a good chance to have an impact on the country. In 1980, the first classes were held for AP majors. The program was begun by Charles Bailey, who is now the director of the American Institute of Applied Politics. The play, suspended after the 1981 championship playoff game in which fighting broke out on the field, has yet to resume. I thought it would be too dangerous to have it this year, said Richard Brockmyer, director of Campus Life. People here take their flag football too seriously." Play was stopped, according to Brockmyer, after the Mongoose and the Snakes started fighting and could not be controlled, during last years championship game. The major problem with the program, said Brockmyer, is that the budget did not call for getting qualified referees who knew enough about the game. The officiating was terrible," agreed James Nickelson, a member of the Mongoose team, there were penalties where players should have been kicked out of the game earlier. Whether or not intramural football will be back at Westminster is still an unanswered question. I am not saying we are going to have flag football next year, said Brockmyer, "but 1 am willing to sit down and talk with interested students. The response from the student body has been minimal, said Brockmyer, "aside from a few grunts and groans from the boys dorm, only one person has come in to sit down and talk with me. The feeling the dorm had, according to Craig Swain, a resident of Carleson Hall and a member of the Mongoose team, is that last year Brock put his foot down so hard on the subject that it seemed we never had a chance. To make up for the lack of sports activity this fall, Brockmyer has introduced ultimate frisbee. Its ridiculous, continued Swain, "if fighting can happen in football, why not in any other sport? "Ultimate frisbee, said Brockmyer, was not a success. Brockmyer is quick to discredit a rumor that said play was stopped solely because of the incident in last years playoff game. No single team or person was responsible for having flag football canceled this year, said Brockmyer. There were problems with sportsmanship on every team last year. The outcome of the decision to play or not next year is an extremely sensitive issue. I would love to play again, said Mark McOmber, an alumnus of the College, eligible to play under the current rules. If it is brought back, however, the budget should be expanded to include professional referees. The incident last year takes away from the fun of football, said Chuck Chiarotti, resident of Carleson Hall. Not having football this year is an extreme measure and they are taking a lot away from the people who like to play. Ran Czajka an AP major. It may be true that most Americans are not there concentrating on politics at this time. However, is a small but strong and enthusiastic group of students at Westminster College who will be putting their time and effort into politics. They are working to make America a better place to live. Paulette Rodriguez Football as it used to be |
