I believe I can safe- ly assert that the Coaches: Lee, Richardson and Mehn will back me up as far as the varsity events are concerned. Margaret Warren and Doug Mead are more than smilng about the intramural program, probably for two reasons. First, the participation has been terrific this year and secondly, the juniors have the intramural lead well in hand for f The Westminster varsity football team literally tore District 7 apart and as a result wound up with the N.A.-I.District 7 trophy and the best overall record in six Western ' states. The very respectable record of seven w ins, one loss and one tie was a team effort all the way and a record the Parson family should be proud of. Ron Hauser and Jerry Floyd have received graduate assistant-ship- s at two universites. Ron Hauser made the Small College squad, and Ronald Nay has a contract with a professional football team. These are the sort of accomplishments that any college would be proud of, much less a college the size of Westminster Coach Howard Richardson guided his hardwood wairiors to another fine basketball season and is starting to make Parson basketball synonom-ou- s with success. The Parsons, led by Gary Bliss, Ron Swenson and Jerry Nielsen, went through the season with a very commendable victory total. Although the boys were capable of winning a few more games than they actually did, their efforts could by no means be slighted in any way. Among their feats this year, Westminster finished second in the Top of the World in Alamosa, Tournament Colorado, and also was the Northern Division representative in District 7 in the N.A.-I.After enjoying such a it will be rather season, good difficult to continue this type , of basketball next year. Mr. . Richardson will be in a slight state of rebuilding next season as far as height and scoring power is concerned. ' Mr. Mehns track efforts were cut short this spring but it seemed that in the meets participated in, the results were better than expected. This was a green team with respect to college experience, so every consideration must be given to the resulting track season in this light. It is hopeful that track will be an activity to again fill the Westminster sports arena in the not to distant future. In writing this editorial and . 61-6- 2. They have provided the partisan crowd (?) of spectators with a great sense of school loyalty and esprit de corps In such a way as to make our school proud of their conduct, as well as our in summing teams, In our athletic en- deavors. They have had more than a little trouble in doing this, simply because our varsity sjmrts have not been well attended by the students here at Westminster. This leads me to disgress briefly on the one sore spot I have as sports writer and enthusiast. I was rather dismayed this last year to see the small number of people who actually came to the football and basketball games. I have yet to hear a legitmate excuse or answer that bears out why at least 75 percent of the dorm students and 50 percent of the town students were not at these activties. I respect illness and work as respectable answers but I have doubts that 350 students, at a minimum, were either sick or Especially, do I working. winder how any sincere Westminster student can attend this institution without having any interest whatsoever in the athletics participated in by our Varsity squads. There is certainly more to college life and the education that goes along with' it, than going to your classes, passing tests and drinking coffee in the student lounge. I am happy to see the womens varsity basketball team continuing and I sincerely wish to see more of this sort of womens partiepation. Mrs. Garrison and her group of girls are to be congratulated. Sure, Im in favor of the John Birch Society, anyone who doesnt like trees is a pig. This brings me to a very interesting subject. It concerns the flag waving, apple pie eating, baseball playing, vodka hating groups in our society. They go by many different names, but their ultimate end is the same, to preserve the principles of freedom in the United States, and in their opinion, anyone who disagrees is a hard core communist. Well, enough of this 2b gura. 3b Nay. 2; Gibbons, 2; communistic Congress, and the President, of course, has a leftward tendancy. Then in order to see that their precious freedoms are not abused, we must have groups of men to go around and make sure that these freedoms are not taken too lightly; otherwise a purge would be in order. This, naturally, is the only way to preserve our freedoms. Who knows your next door neighbor, might have red hair. I have just given you the fine points of these ' groups. For instance the Fifth Amendment. Everyone knows that the commies hide behind the subversive ideas of due process and self incrimination.
