If I was unhappy with Westminster, I would have transferred a long time ago. A mere rise in tuition will not make me leave. A suitable alternative to this yearly tradition of tuition justification would be to send out a letter that is upfront. Westminster students are, one hopes, an intelligent sort, aware of the fact that it takes money to run a college. The college is constantly trying to improve, and those improvements take money. I am happy that the ' college is constantly striving for excellence. I am glad that it is taking my education seriously. I just ask that I am told this in an upfront way, instead of the current system of using a marketing fireworks display of a letter. I just want to know the Jonathan Newman Photo Editor Every spring, the president of Westminster College sends out a letter! This letter outlines all the wonderful things about Westminster. It speaks of building additions, new and exciting programs, the quality instruction students receive, ways the quality of instruction is being improved and the extensive list of May term trips. Towards the end of the letter comes the dreaded information of tuition increases. This year the increase is 6.4 percent. My problem is not with the tuition increase but with the rosy picture the letter tries to paint, and the way this yearly letter tries to justify tuition increases. As a college student, I know that tuition raises are a yearly occurrence. I am accustomed to this and am willing to put up with it to receive a straight facts, e good education. I do not feel that I need to have this raise justified. If you havent had the joy that comes with partaking in an internship, let me fill you in... You gain experience, knowledge and an overall understanding of what your future will be like if you choose to work in that field. At least thats whats supposed to happen. Though I did gain valuable knowledge and skills, if my future is anything like my internship. Ill be packing up and moving to Florida, because Ill be ready to retire. First I of all, the tide intern should be changed to office monkey. I know there are menial tasks in any profession that must be done, but I thought that big companies had people to take out the trash and clean stuff, you know, like janitors. I also know that helping out at company events comes with the trade, but they have devices for carrying drinks around. Its called a drink tray. Apparently they fashioned me since I could push myself around and dodge guests better. Now, Im not complaining about everything, but since when does a job in communication require advanced plumbing and carpentry knowledge? If I wanted to fix sinks and toilets and hang pictures and fix doors, I wouldnt be at Westminster. If so, I think Im about to receive the worlds most expensive -- regard to the You Know? item in the April 2 edition of The Forum, I have to protest. The use of the phrase rule of thumb is I Intern Equals craftsman degree. Maybe Im being a little too harsh, but I wouldnt complain so much if I were getting paid. I would have done anything they asked me, even with a smile, if I were making money for it. But those paid internships are overrated anyways. We normal interns find it more rewarding to get nothing.
