Show Reviews MOVIE LPs Castaways: no Blue Lagoon Reasonable success for Pink Floyd by Erick Scheen Pink Floyd A Momentary Lapse of Reason If ever a group is destined to go on forever, it is the legacy of Pink Floyd. With the release of A Momentary Lapse of Reason, the band proves its staying power with older audiences, as well as the ability to recreate the magic for a new generation. This time, however, songwritcrvocalist guitarist David Gilmour, drummer Nick Mason, and keyboardist Richard Wright (as well as a veritable potpourri of guest musicians) cast their spells without the aid of former songwritervocalistsbassist Roger Waters. Reason proves once and for all, Waters isnt needed or missed. Waters, who claimed to be the driving force behind Pink Floyd, embarked on what has turned out to be a rather disappointing solo career. When the other members of Floyd, who also had solo ventures with mixed results, discussed reforming Floyd, Waters bar then from using the name Pink Floyd. He claimed that the album would flop, and that the memory of Pink Floyd would be marred forever. After several months of litigation, however. Waters dropped the suit. Thus, Pink Floyd is reborn in all its splendor. Reason, the bands latest effort since the depressing Final ' Cut in 1983, brings back filed a lawsuit to i much of the feelings and memories many older listeners have, but with a renewed energy. It seems as though the band polled its listeners to find out what they liked best in Pink Floyd, and mixed all their results into the 10 songs comprising the new album. For instance, Signs of Life, the first track, recreates the eerie feeling and goose bumps one feels when listening to "Shine on You Crazy Diamond from Wish You Were Here. In fact, Signs could easily have been named Diamond: The Sequel with nothing lost in the translation. The background voices and sound effects that are so prevalent on The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon (Dark Side, by the way, is rapidly approaching its 700th week on the Billboard Top 200 albums, and is by far the longest charting album in history) are found in several places on the new LP, once again conjuring up old memories and magic. These effects, coupled with ominous keyboards, bittersweet guitars, and some of the latest recording techniques such as digital recording and spherical sound, do more than appease the hunger of the longtime fans they compel a new audience to take notice. And notice they have, because the first several dates of the forthcoming tour, which were in arenas of no less than 60,000 seats, were sold out within hours. In a nutshell. Pink Floyd is back and better than ever. The new album is a definite 'winner, and .quite possibly album of the year. You just cant get much better than that. R.E.M. evidence in Document'form by Erick Scheen The sound of R.E.M. has often been described as a mix of folk, rock, and new wave. While this description may or may not fit, one thing is certain: the sound is unique, and it is very good. Their latest release, Document, provides more than enough evidence. R.E.M. seems to follow the addage always a bridesmaid, never a bride with their albums. They provide the listener with quality, material that never gets old, yet they never seem to overcome the hidden obstacle, keeping them from flooding the world in U2 fashion. In other words, critics and audiences alike applauded them, but mass success evades them. This tragic fact doesnt seem to bother them, because they keep churning out better and better material. Document is composed of 11 songs that span the range of directions, yet maintain a consistency that compels one to keep listening. Their first single from the LP, The One I Love, presents us with a raw, bittersweet ballad (sort of) of lost love. It isinterest- ing to note that R.E.M. is one of the few bands that can write a quality song in under 30 words (yes, I counted them). Equally interesting is the tune IPs the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine). This song brings memories of Bob Dylan, while maintaining a fresh perspective.' After all, how many bands can make you smile while they sing about such a dreadful subject? Overall, Document brings a loose, folkrock sound that should delight and enchant the listener. Even if success once again evades them, R.E.M. can take pride in the knowledge that they have achieved what very few bands do today: provided a sound that makes one think (but not too hard), and an excellent sound, at that. by Tricia Martinez the latest Cannon Films restars veteran actor Oliver Reed, and "Castaways, lease, newcomer Amanda Donahoe, as the two unlikely heroes. In the press book that Cannon sent me as a preview, there was a picture of the two in lustful clutch. Great a yuppie version of Blue Lagoon. Luckily, the movie was nothing like the advertisement. The movies director is Nicholas Roeg, the master-min- d behind The Man Who Fell to Earth, an unforgettable cult classic. Roeg is most known for his unconventional approach to the camera, and "Castaways has his stamp all over it. Stylish and moody angles with a psychological twist are what carry most of this movie. ... Castaways is the real life story of Gerald Kingsland and Lucy Erving, and the year they spent on Tuin Island, off the coast of Australia. Sick of dreary existence in London, Gerald put an advertisement in a local singles magazine for-- female companion to accompany him. Lucy answers the ad, they get married (Australian law for an Australian island), and take off to paradise. Tuin was a little more than a mile long, with coconut trees and a freshwater creek. They had prepared themselves for the terrain with vegetable seeds, a tent, a knife, a case of instant rice, and 50 plus packages of Polaroid film. Unfortunately, a drought struck halfway through the growing season, leaving them defenseless from malnutrition. This becomes just another problem on the list. Lucy had decided upon arrival that there a ;CART00t3 NIGHT Oct, 9 8:30 p.ra. Tickets $5.00 Available in'ASWC or Campus Life 2201 Drive S. Soon after, bites from sandflies festered, leaving Gerald unable to walk, and deprived of sexual companionship, he begins to wither. The year on the island turns into a microcosm of a twenty year marriage. Lucy becomes consumed with her power, bullying and manipulative, shreiking and mean, knocking down the gender lines that they had both set up for themselves. After being saved from malnutrition by mission nurses from the nearest island, Gerald began offering his services as repairman for the outboard fishing boats, and was soon commuting regularly to Badu, becoming detached from Lucy. Lucy then decides that the only way to regain her power is to sleep with him. He readily accepts, but she knows that the control she once had is no longer intact. At the end of 13 months, when they separate, they are both very changed by the experience. Oliver Reed plays Gerald well, showing for once, a shy side that helps take the bitter edge off of his usually intense sarcasm. Amanda Donahoe plays Lucy with a deadpan humor. Unfortunately, though, she turns Lucy into a typical whiner that tends to cover up any humor at all in her character. The screenplay is written by the real life Lucy Erving, and although its not great, it is fair. Castaways, is an okay movie. It is humoat times, and Nicholas Roeg captures the audience continually with his strange parallel of society and survival. It definitely is not another Blue Lagoon. rous, Make a dog happy: adopt; him by Julie Smith More than 13 million homeless, lost and abandoned canines are waiting to pack their bags and find a new home this October as Adopt-A-Do- g Month returns for its seventh year.
