Its a differ- ent kind of music than what youre used to hearing, but every afternoon at 3 oclock there is the rhythmic beat of the Girl s Basketball team going through its drills. The team is shaping up real well considering the amount of girls that have came out. Only two new players have come out so far this year in the two weeks of practice. Barbara Forrest, a junior, tall, lanky, and fast, will be an asset to the forward line. Carol Boam, the only freshman on the team so far is a fast little forward who has shown a great deal of promise. Carol, from ' Hanna, Wyoming, pulled a ligament in her leg during, practice and is waiting for it to heal before she gets into the heavy pract ticing. The returning players are playing the same good basketball that was played last year. Myrna Bertrum. a veteran of two years, is showing a great influence on the guard line in the right guard position. Joy Hammer, who is also returning to play for the third year, will use her talents in the center guard position. Nome Bassford and Mary Anne Taylor will e in the left guard position. The team will be greatly benefited by Betty Griffith playing for the third year. Betty, who is only a junior, is fast, can shoot from anywhere on the court and has an intense desire to win, making her the same great ball player that she was last year. A 24 point third period broke open a fairly tight nonconference game. That gave the Parsons a 37-- 0 lead going into the final quarter. There my is a great backfield along with a strong line in this team. There are a few old faces from previous years, but the majority of the faces are new at Westminster. With a 0 record, the Parsons travel to Helena, Montana with high hopes of coming home with their seventh straight win. All of the games have been good, full of action and excit-m- . Some have been exceptional. Even with cases of the flu and some injuries the Parsons spirit was never dampened. To the present date the brightest star in the Parsons crown was the 62-- 0 Homecoming victory over the University of California at Riverside. Constantly striving to better themselves, the team is eager and enthusiastic. In the backfield are Dale Thibault, a returning hard running halfback. Always good for extra yards is halfback Doug Andreasen in his second season for the Parsons. Ed Pasquale is a second year man also, playing very efficiently the position of fullback. Jim Johnson and John Rooks are the men who-calthe signals and each plays well in the quarterback slot. Ross Varoz, who returned to the lineup after being sidelined for about a season due to a shoulder injury, has shown his old spark in the halfback position. Bruce Harvey and Bucky Armstrong, newcomers, but energetic and enthusiastic players, also play halfback. Bud Murray and Wayne Garringe add their stamina to the fullback position while Larry Eldredge and Gil Cordova are two more fast running quarterbacks. Every coach dreams of a winning team, with a backfield. But no team can be a winner without tackles, starring guards, ends and centers. Westminster is indeed fortunate in having a line that works so well together. In the center position, Mitch Markis looks like a giant and plays with determination. Big Ed Van Leeuwen also fills the center position with force and power. Tom Ault, Dick Pilati and George Watkins are the returning ends. Each of these men are assets to the lineup. Jack Wilson, Gordon Eldredge and Paul Brown are the newcomers to this portion of the team. The big, hard hitting tackles are just that. With 62 220 pound Larry Kirkes, 62 200 pound Dave Farris, 61 200 pound Don Thomas, 62 215 pound A1 Opdyke as the returning tackles, who could ask for more. But there is still 58 180 pound Jay May and 62 195 pound Ken Chytrus. Add these, together and you get plenty of power. Perhaps the most outstanding lineman is Bob Halgren,e who is the only returning guard. Kenyon Simmons, Paul and Ken Kobayashi help Bob in the guard spot. Coach Merceh, with the able assistane of Coach Richardson, has molded together the greatest team of Westminsters prep history. Each team member is responsible for the success of the team. Ken Ault and Jerry Mercer, the trainer and manager, deserve credit, too. With three games left to play, the Parsons are looking forward to the Colorado Mines game. We are not predictors of the future, but if the past is any indication, the team shouldnt have much to worry about. But until that final gun goes off, we can only say, best of luck to a great group of guys and a g team. good, I 6-- Gor-ring- clean-playiin- e BEAR WITH US We Know This Issue of "The Parson" Isn't What It Should Be OR WILL BE FROM HERE ON OUT.
