Show September 12, 2000 The Forum - 2 do, the I.T. Department makes student security a high priority. Dear Students, Im so glad to be back in school. I didnt like to sleep very much anyway. I hope everyone had a good summer and is excited for another great year of higher education. Let me just bring everyone up to speed on what is going on with the Associated Students of Westminster College (ASWC). I am surrounded by some terrific people in A.S.W.C. who have been working hard and will continue to work hard to make life outstanding for students at Westminster. Tofi Taafua, the Vice President, has been planning some great activities this year and if you havent been to one yet, you really are missing out. Our Treasurer this year, Brian Griffith, has been meticulous with our money so far. Nick Jacobs, the first ever A.S.W.C. Information Technology Manager is extremely talented and is going to have a great looking website for us. Krystal Powell, the Attorney General, has been running the Judicial Branch of A.S.W.C. like clockwork. And every one of the Senators is dedicated to representing the entire student body and making life better for students here at Westminster. Over the summer, A.S.W.C. worked with the Information Technology (I.T.) Department in taking students social security numbers out of their email addresses. It is much safer for students to have this number kept confidential. The I.T. department has done an outstanding job with this. Despite all the other things they have to The A.S.W.C. officers took a stroll around the campus at night a few weeks ago. We were looking to see what kinds of safety measures the school has in place for us, such as lighting and emergency phones. For the most part, we were very impressed at how safe we felt. There were a few areas that werent as well lit as they could have been and we had some suggestions for the existing emergency phones as well as some places on campus that could use an emergency phone. I sat down with Saeed Rezai, the Director of Campus Patrol, and told him what we had found. He was more than willing to hear about our discoveries and do anything he could to make our campus safer. This little, tight-kn- it community in which we function here at Westminster really is a ter filter? torn Welcome to the 2000-200- 1 school year from myself and everyone else at The Forum. I hope all of you had a summer break that was as relaxing as mine was, and that all of you feel prepared to accomplish great things this year. The Forum has grand things in store for its readers this year, as well. We have arranged new funding with ASWC, so that each student pays a subscription to The Forum as part of his or her student activity fee. In this way, I believe that the student body can feel more directly responsible for the content and the actions of the staff of The Forum. This is your paper, not mine. Nor does it The volunteer fair, coming soon to Westminster Campus, is a way for students to get involved with community service throughout the Salt Lake Valley. It will be held in Tanner Plaza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on September 13. Companies, organizations and service agencies will set up booths in the plaza for interested students. Gail lessen in the Volunteer Center said, It is a great way for students to get further involved in the community. Students will be able to talk to representatives from all over the valley, build networks and pick up flyers and pamphlets. The Volunteer Center will hold an open house to help students get interested and involved in community service projects. The open house will be on September 15 in the Volunteer Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. They will provide food and information about upcoming service projects. rific place. Each entity at this school is willing to make adjustments and improvements for the benefit of the students. It amazes me that everyone at Westminster works together for a common good. me in person. My email address is and the phone number in the A.S.W.C. office is 832-271- 5. Sincerely, Rich Nelson ASWC President If you have any questions or would just like to chat about your favorite episode of the Simpsons or the best Beatles song, please email or call me or you can stop by the A.S.W.C. office and talk to as it is for journalism, and belong to the staff of The Forum. We at The Forum wish to banish the problems that have plagued us in the past so that we can become the student publication all of you expect and deserve. This change, I believe, will come from hard work, a firm commitment to the task at hand, and a fast adherence to journalistic truth and integrity. I have learned many things in my time as a staff writer for The Fomm the past school year. Mostly, though, I have learned of the possible place The Forum could take as a genuine voice for the student body of Westminster College. To do this, though. The Forum needs your help. To aid in the improvement of The Forum, we need a responsive audience. Variety is the spice of life. , there is no better spice for The Forum than your input in the form of editorials and special articles to the Fomm. Let the appearance of the letter from ASWC president Rich Nelson in this issue be the first in many responses from our readership. Lastly, as a fellow student, I would like to encourage all of you to strive for excellence in the coming school year. I believe that, at Westminster especially, each of us is enriched and encouraged by the attempts at greatness of those we see around us. Keep up the good work, and have a great year. With Best Regards, Lucas Hill. |
