The program, which will begin at 8 p.m. each evening, will include Symphony No. 2 in E Minor by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Symphony No. 34 by W.A. Jimmie Dale Gilmore, along with Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, Jesse Taylor and Syl Rice, formed the Flatlanders in 197 1 . They released an album oh tape in 1972. The album was available only as an import until 1990, when it was reissued on CD in the United States. The Flatlanders blended modem lyrics with acoustic string-ban- d accompaniment in an innovative yet traditional style. Ely and Hancock went on to success in the music industry. Ely appears with Dwight Yokum, John ck Mellencamp, John Prine and James McMurty as the Buzzin Cousins on the soundtrack to Mellencamps new movie Souvenirs. Gilmore disappeared from the music scene until the late 80s, when he recorded two albums for the Hightone label. Opening with arresting acoustic guitar Tonight I Think Im Gonna Go Downtown sets the tone of the CD. Gilmores voice is a cross between Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzel with a little Jimmy Rogers thrown in. Dont Be A Stranger To Your Heart continues the contemporary vein. Gilmore is asking someone to acknowledge their feelings and his. Blue Moon Waltz is another waltz, as the name suggests. Gilmore meets his hue love under a blue moon. Keith Carper adds a nice touch with bowed upright bass. These Blues reminds me of Hank Williams, Sr. Gilmore mentions Hank as an influence in the liner notes. The guitar breakis straightfrom Honky TonkBlues. Gilmore thanks the Lord that a loser can sometimes win. Midnight Train is an electric blues some good electric blues guitar song with Teddy Roddy on harmonica. Its the blues song with a train theme. Story of You ends the CD with a return to the acoustic instruments. A piano is added to the fiddle, dobro and acoustic guitar. Gilmore sings to a departed friend, thanking him for the memories. After Awhile features country music in a traditional style. Acoustic instruments dominate the CD. Standout songs are Tonight I Think Im Gonna Go Downtown, After Awhile, Blue Moon Waltz and Midnight Train. This CD is a good choice if you want a change from over produced contemporary country or if you count Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzel among your favorite artists. Jimmie Dale Gilmores voice is unique and he is backed by impressive musicians. The CD is also good for irritating your headbanger friends.
