Ferry Plaza Dedicated to Honor Westminster College Benefactor September 25 - Westminster by Kevin Williams Forum staff writer The newly constructed Ferry Plaza, located at the main drive entrance to Wesminster College, serves as a memorial to Colonel William Ferry and his wife Jeanette whose generosity in 1902 provided the land where Westminster College now sits. According to a report by Emil Nyman, a Westminster historian, Ferry and his wife, who lived in Park City, agreed to finance the purchase of 21 acres of the original 50 needed. That was when the institution was given its official name, Westminster College. Before his death in 1904, Ferry made arrangements for $15,000 ofhis estate to be used for the construction of a womens dormitory named after him. In 1908, a commemorative cornerstone was laid in theconstructionoftheFerryHall dormitory, which stood until 1981 when it was condemned. The Historical Society of Utah then told Westminster officials that in order to utilize the building and the land, Ferry Hall had to be renovated instead of being torn down. At that time, Westminster lacked funding for the renovation. According to Stephen Morgan, executive vice president and treasurer, Bill Gore passed away seven months later, Auditorium. At least 50 percent of the women polled by psychology proffessor, Robert Bridges, expressed extreme fear about AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome), a fated disease that destroys the human immune systems. By contrast, only 15 to 20 percent ofthe men surveyed expressed extreme fear of the malady. Women are socialized to take responsibility for reproductive health issues, said Dr. Richard Keeling of the American College Health Associations AIDS task force. Keeling, who said that Bridges conclusions were consistent with other surveys he had seen, theorized that women were more frightened of the diseasebecause they feel they have less power in their relationships, and may not be willing to endanger the relationships to protect themselves from AIDS. Meanwhile, Keeling said, men distance themselves from the entire subject of AIDS because of its association with homosexuality. Men also tend to disavow risk in general, said Keeling. Also, some scientific evidence shows that it is easier for men to transmit the AIDS virus to women than for women to transmit it to men, Keeling said. However, some men take this to the extreme that there is no risk.
