Famous Directors Create New York Stories Movie News By Jennifer Christensen Marking a historic collaboration between three of the most prestigious directors working today, the movie "New York Stories" is a true movie prize. Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Woody Allen team up in this film and through three short story films, give us their impressions of New York. Each of the men have previously used New York as the setting for their movies. Scorsese filmed "After Hours," presenting New York with a "nightmarish quality," while Allen used the same place to film the romantic "Manhattan." Coppola created an Italian country out of New York for his movies, "The Godfather" and "Godfather II." The idea for "New York Stories" came about when Allen suggested to his producer Robert Greenhut, that they do three short films of his. Greenhut felt there might be other prominent directors with ideas that were aimed more at a short film format rather than full length. ' . Greenhut then strove to find three directors whose styles would be diverse enough and interesting enough to work together in a film. Scorsese began shooting his segment of "New Y6rk Stories" in the summer of 1988. Scorsese saw this as an opportunity to pursue an Idea that came to him many years back. His segment entitled, "Life Lessons" 4 analyzes the difficulties in relationships, the Jealousy and constant testing of each other. Scorsese enjoys working in Manhattan, the films primary set. He chose an area in the East Village, where he grew up, to do most of the films shooting. Coppola brought a fantasy to reality as he finally had the chance to work with his the short daughter, who helped story, "Life Without Zoe." Coppola wanted to film the story in New York because he said, "It is a place that has so much energy and such a strong personality." At the age of 1 2, Zoe and her friends wear Chanel as their everyday attire, and read "Women's Wear" and "Vogue" regularly. Coppola's daughter, Sophia, said the movie "should remind people of those '40s films in which everyone is polished and dressed." Allen, who had many ideas for his segment of the film, finally decided upon "Oedipus Wrecks." This comedy deals with an attorney trying to come to terms with his mother. Allen said, "It's an idea that I thought was funny and lends itself to the short story format very readily." Allen used a variety of New York locations, such as Tavern on the Green restaurant in Central Park. Allen feels that New York offers many astonishing locatons that complement his films. co-wri- te SLC Dancers Perform.
