History of Founder s Day Westminster College will observe Founders Day this year on Friday, April 8. This marks the 1 13 th year since the colleges opening on April 12, 1875. What is now known as Westminster College began as three small rooms in the First Presbyterian Church of Salt Lake City. The Pastor of the church. Rev. Josiah Welch, wanted to establish a day school in connection with his church. Welch was declared as the schools founder by its first principal. Dr. John M. Coyner. At the time, the school was located on the northeast comer of Second East and Second South streets. When the school first opened, 45 new desks awaited the 27 students enrolled on its first day. Students ranged in age and abilities from those just learning their alphabet to those studying Latin, Greek, and higher mathematics. Dr. Coyners wife instructed the primaiy pupils, his daughter the intermediate students, and Dr. Coyner the advanced students.
