What do these people have In common? They have all completed a Cooperative Education, or internship, while In school. This Cooperative experience Is Just what It sounds like. After a student has completed a minimum of 60 credit hours, with a minimum GPA of 2.5, he or she can take that academic background Into the chosen field skills and get to learn practical class credit for doing so. The student, in conjuctlon with the employer, determines the learning objectives of the Internship and then works toward meeting those goals over the course of the semester. At the end of the semester the student Is evaluated on the success In accomplishing those learning objectives. Westminster College offers one hour of class credit for each three hours per week worked In the internship, i.e. a 20 hour work week will get you 6 hours of upper division credit. In addition, some of the Interships pay an hourly wage or a stipend to the student. The Internship Is a cant lose situation for any serious student. In addition to the experience, the class credit, and the income, the Internship also provides contact or networking possibilities with people already well established In the profession. It often proves for students to be a good involved In long-tercareer planning. Employers look beyond the class grades when It comes to hiring recent graduates, and the Cooperative Education shows real - possibly the deciding factor In whether or not you get that job. "The greater the amount of personal effort you put Into your experience, the greater your chances of success will be in obtaining a job after graduation." said Kathy Moran. Tammy Hopkins, ASWC President, said that ASWC Judiciary will check each petition to see that it meets requirements. The requirements for students who will run for Executive Cabinet are: The student must take an ASWC Constitution test after sub- mission of the petition; the student must have a grade point average of2 .6 or higher; he or she must not be on academic probation; the student must have completed at least one semester at Westminster: he or she must have completed at least 24 credit hours at Westminster alone or at Westminster and a previously attended school. There Is another stipulation for those petitioning which Hopkins said will possibly be changed. Under the current constitution, e a student must be a student to run for an ASWC office. The constitution is now being revised and Hopkins said she hopes to see this requirement changed so that part-tim- e students may run for office. While Hopkins emphasized the Importance of the above qualifications, she said they are secondary to the quality of the person who petitions. "The more interested they are in the students and in the students needs, the more successful they will be In office, she said. Hopkins also stressed the time commitment involved in being an ASWC Executive Cabinet member. She said a lot of people are unaware of the large amount of time it takes to be in student government. Hopkins is enthusiastic about this year's election and hopes to see a highly competitive election that is well run. I strongly encourage anyone who is interested to run," she said.
