Show A Musical Phase Performing Arts by Kristie G. Sowar ds Westminster College of Salt Lake City will conduct its first concert series this 1987-8- 8 year. The series is an effort to combine performances by the Westminster Quintet, Symphonic Band, Choir and a few guest soloists into one music season. President Charles II. Dick, who organizes the program, states that the purpose in havFirst, it is a ing the concert series is two-folform of public relations and second, it will bring performing music arts back to Westminster. d. It is important for any academic institu- tion to have all phases of the performing arts, says Dick. He stresses that this is. particularly true for a liberal arts institution. The series begins with a recital by Violinist John C. Thompson in October. Thompson, a first violinist in the Utah Symphony and of the Salt Lake Chamber Ensemble, is one of three artists who will be featured in the concert series this year. Other soloists include President Charles H. Dick, a flute soloist in the Westminster College Quintet; and Alan Badham, a Westminster College alumnus who plays principal clarinet with the Westminster Symphonic Band, and clarinet soloist with the Westmihster College Quintet. These artists, according to Dick, will perform at no cost to the institution with the exception of tuning the piano. Eight concerts by the Westminster College Choir, the Westminster Symphonic Band and the Westminster Quintet round out the season which runs through late April. . Westminster students are encouraged to actively attend the concerts. According to Dick, both students taking music classes and those who are interested in the performing arts can be benefited greatly by the series. Tickets for the Westminster College Symphonic Band and Quintet are $2.00. The three recitals and the two performances by the Westminster College Choir are free of charge. Have you ever wondered... Old Grounds Invite New Building by N. L, Spackman This fall, Westminster College will be replacing the seventy-nin- e year old Ferry Hall with a new business building, according to Edward S. Sweeney, Westminsters Vice President for Development and General Counsel. Construction of the new building, to be located in the southeast area of Westminsters campus, will begin this fall. The excavation, survey and soil studies for the building have already been completed. The local architecture firm of Gillies, Stransky and Brems has been retained. Rick Howa, a member of the Board of Trustees and an alumnus, will be acting as the general contractor for the project. A formal press release and conference will take place in October of this year, presenting the project to the public and students. The official groundbreaking of the building will be Oct. 20. At this time it will become general knowledge, that the building will be the only newer one on campus being fully funded by 2 Forum the family of a well known benefactor and alumnus of Westminster. The name of the family will be released in October, at which time the family will make the presentation. One of the conditions of the gift is that the curriculum of the school of business be modified to include and develop courses in free enterprise and entrepreneurship, as well as regular business courses. Because of this and the growth of business degrees, Westminsters school of business will be one of the finest schools in the intermountain west. That, according to Sweeney, is the hope of Westminster College. The facility will house the school of business, including the faculty and administration. It will also be a classroom facility with lecture halls. The architecture of the business building correspond with Bamberger Hall. It will be a red brick and glass, two story structure, containing approximately 18,000 square feet, with the entry facing the west side. will Concert Series Schedule October 22, 1987 John Thompson Recital-Vio- lin Nunemaker Place, 8:00 p.m. October 2J, 1987 Westminster Symphonic Band Payne Gymnasium, 8:00 p.m. November5, 1987 Westminster College Quintet Nunemaker Place, 8:00 p.m. December 5,1987 Westminster Choir Walker Hall, 7:30 p.m. January H, 1988 January 21, 1988 Alan Badham Recital Clarinet Nunemaker Place, 8:00 p.m. Westminster College Quintet Nunemaker Place, 8:00 p.m. January SO, 1988 Westminster Symphonic Band Payne Gymnasium, 8:00 p.m. March SI, 1988 Charles Dick Recital Flute Nunemaker Place, 8:00 p.m. April 9, 1988 Westminster Choir Walker Hall, 7:30 p.m. April 16, 1988 Westminster Symphonic Band Payne Gymnasium, 8:00 p.m. April 21, 1988 Westminster College Quintet Nunemaker Place, 8:00 p.m. AMERICAN V CANCER f SOCIETY - J. |
