In the Sept 23, 1983 edition of the Forum the editorial addressed the issue of the name Westminster Parsons for the soccer team. The editorial suggested that someone with authority (the administration, the student government, andor the athletic department) act to change the name to something more appropriate. Almost two and a half years have passed and the college still uses the name Parsons. The Forum feels that the name which refers to an Anglican clergyman holding a benefice or any of certain other Protestant clergymen holding a benefice does not reflect the current atmosphere at Westminster. The college dropped its Presbyterian sponsorship back in 1974. The current academic catalog states that Westminster is an independent, college. If this is true, why does the school still insist on keeping the name Parsons? Maybe its just another case of apathy that seems to plague our campus. . free-standin- g, In 1982 the newspaper managed to change from the Parson to the Forum because the editor at that time felt that the name of the newspaper reflected the church affiliation of the college and the name did not reflect the essence of the paper which she felt was the goal y of communication. If the newspaper can do it why cant the college? When President Charles Dick took office he expressed the importance of tradition, the Forum feels that the school should update its image by changing the name of the mascot. However, if a new name is chosen such as Scotts or Highlanders the Scottish element of our Presbyterian origin can be kept and tradition will not be lost. two-wa- This editorial can suggest that the change be made but, someone with the authority to make the change will have to take charge and take the initiative or we will forever be known as the Westminster College Parsons. self-governi- non-sectaria- n, The Forum Staff letters to the editor Nurse Checks Temperature put on the list of improvements a better heating system for Malouf Hall? Gay later) read more like a plot to a hard core porn flick than a college newspaper article. If the only type of problems his twisted mind is prepared to discuss are sexually perverted then perhaps he should seek employment with Hustler magazine because there is no place for him in a publication designed for thinking, educated adults. The only purpose Mr. Forsomes column serves is to tarnish the reputation and diminish the level of respect our school paper is worthy of. After having given counsel to his readers for so long, maybe hed be interested in taking a little counsel from one of them: Run along little e column with boy and take your quasi-advic- you.
