Jones pioneered work in group therapy and training and thanatology (death and dying). His work in group therapy began when he worked with psychiatrists in psych units in hospitals. Jones referred to himself as a guinea pig" because it was an era when group therapy was only just beginning and psychiatrists werent very aware of group therapy techniques. As a behavioral specialist for Manpower, Jones trained minority rapists, Ihurderers, and other criminals to work with delinquents. The idea behind the program was to replace the social workers in Watts, Harlem and other cities with these previous criminals. He said it was like an encounter group. He published several papers on group therapy and group training. His last area of pioneering and close to the Westminster community is thanatoiogy. Jones began teaching a class in the summer a few years ago on death and dying. It was so popular, and still is, that it once had 150 students in it. Ive had students take the class thinking that Im going to tell them some magical way to avoid death, Jones said. Many people say that death and dying is a morbid subject and shouldnt be talked about, comments Jones, but theres a need for a class such as this because many people try to avoid death and repress it and express it in unhealthy ways, but they should dispell their fears and talk about death." Jones has done quite a few workshops in hospitals. Its dealt with in a context of mutual pretense. In other words, lets pretend that no one is dying. The doctors don't want to talk about it and neither do the patients, but the fact is that 90 of us will die in a hospital and that needs to be acknowledged." The class will be taught again this summer and Jones is expecting the usual turnout of quite a few people. He encourages everyone to take the class. Death is inevitable and people need to accept that and quit putting things off until tomorrow because, one day, there wont be any more tomorrow s, he said. Will the Real market place and with the position WestminsI think that it is probably the right decision for today. He feels that decisions such as that may need to be in the future, however. Centenary College is a private college with a day enrollment of 850 students. It was founded by the United Methodist Church but is no longer religiously affiliated. The search for a new college president began in October by a committee made up of members of the Board of Trustees, faculty, students, alumni and the Womans Board. According to Allan Kuusisto, academic vice president and an advisor to the search committee, Dick was recommended by both the presidential seareh committee and the executive committee of the board of trustees. The board of trustees made the decision to hire Dick in their meeting on March 25. There were 90 to 100 applications received fro the position, Kuusisto added. Six applicants were brought on campus for meetings with faculty representatives, students, alumni and members of the college administration. ter is in, Dear Hlaine, find masturbation more fun and erotic than sleeping with my husband.
