It is life itself, here and now, in every calss hour, in every assignment, in every seeming- SKETCHES by Gary Johnston Recently I had the good fortune to acquire three books which are certainly a welcome addition to my embryonic library. All three are outstanding in 'their class, and all three are procurable from the college library. So hoping after this subtle hint you wont try to borrow them from me!) I'll try to give you a bit of the background and content of these books. The books are Gustave Flauberts Madame Bovary, Leo Tolstoys Anna Karenina, and W. Somerset Maughams Of Homan Bondage. Flaubert literally created' the modern realistic novel and has influenced directly or indirectly, according to Maugham, all the writers of fiction since his day. One of the most controversial novels of its day, Madame Bovary is the product of almost five years of writing and research. It is the starkly realistic story of an adulteress; of her romantic dreams, her dull husband, her lovers, foolish extravagances, and her tragic Herbert ly trivial daily task. Ross Brown, Edward Little Professor of Rhetoric, and Oreatory, r recently spoke in these terms at a morning Chapel service. Do not make the mistake of taking Bowdoin for granted, ProEven those fessor Brown said. with fat allowances, those who never see their terms bills, are being substantially subsidized by generations of Bowdoin men whose , gifts provide endowments, scholarships, loan and book funds. The book did for me what I wanted and when it was issued to the world I found myself free forever from the pains and unhappy recollections and fears that had tormented me. This novel too, deals with an adultress. This time a shameless barmaid. All three books were, at the outset, considered to be immoral, but all three have risen above the prudish condemnations to take their places in the realm male proposal of great literature. fra-'temi- ty Or--acl- es all-colle- 6f-ste- p ...
