TIME AND TIDE Time and tide and the waning moon That move through centuries of eons. Across the space of oceans infinite. Time that has no end or beginning; Tide that is endless and ever moving, LIFE OF TOMORROW life of tomorrow, You cannot buy or borrow. Life of yesterday, You cannot get today. So make the best of life. Forget worries and strife. Life is only a passing guest, Life is yours, make it the best. Lowell Miles. FRIENDS , Carrying us on, sweeping us from shore to shore. Even in death, we move upon its cur ent. Until we are caught in some eddy, And left as debris upon the still waters Of time and tide and space. Some are true; Othere are not. Theyll either love you. Or what youve got. Bea Myers, From Ted Malones American Album of Poetry. Lowell Miles. thunder grew until the vibrant thrumming seemed to destroy my mind. I clearly heard the omincus, foreboding word that shuddered through the silent Professional Cleaners room DOOM! And as the sound dwelled around me, I Iiegan to perspire freely, then to chill. I fought the nausea and weakness, but it did no good, for I collapsed before reaching the door. The room seemed to swing around in a dizzy' cycle of remembered fear as he recalled how he had passed out. He rose slowly to his feet, walked over to the door, and stepped out. Then a great, rasping sob came from his throat as he stood looking at the whitewashed concrete walls about him. The hanging bulb made harsh light and blotchy shadows in the cell, press-hiagainst the far wall, his hands, pressed palms-flat- , lingers spread, his face a shining, impassive mask except for the wide eyes, dark iris, rimmed with white. He was straight and tall, and a graceful and living shocked and creature, helpless under the pressure of the threat of sudden, violent death. i; !; !; m V. Passing between a pockmarked vendor and a native Egyptian with oiled hair, who waited hopefully, begging for a few piasters, I saw a shaded courtyard upon which several buildings faced. Direclly before was a massive wooden door. Lingering a moment to run my eyes over the entrance, I observed that the only sign was the word "Antiques carved in the door; that, and the rested iion shutters over the window, repelling me. rather than inviting me in. Inside, there was only one candle glowing bluely over the shadowed counter where a grizzled individual I guessed him to be Bedouin sorted out the fragments of a broken stone statue. After a glance at me, he appeared to forget I was even present and Went back to his sorting. The many shelves held a scattering of dusty pottery, brass and bronze objects, with some lamps of mosque design and portions of dubious scarabs, clay tomb figures, cheap oramental stulf for tourist trade. It was then that I noticed a small drum among the broken statuettes. No larger than a small cocoanut, the dium crouched as if about to leat its own self. It was unlike anything I had ever seen. When I took it over to the light, I discovered that it had been cleaned carefully, so that the patina of age showed on the sawtooth cooper surface of the leather. This drum, the old curator said, was found in Nesur. The head is human skin, supeibly tanned. He clenched his wrinkled, withered fingers, and struck the drum a savage blow. They went on down the long, white hall softly talking, their footsteps ringing hollow on the cement floor, echoing into the dull remaining quiet. L.
