Show WESTERN MINING GAZETTEER. Ildonulo Canyon DiMrlrt. New Mill. The Philadelphia Company have paid up all their indebtedness and have taken down the new mill built a year since and are putting up a new mill, intending to prosecute work vigorously. The mines are showing up well, the ore averaging nearly $100 per ton. Lewis District. Started Ur. The Eagle mill at Lewis started up on the 1th and has been running steadily ever since. Everything works finely, and a very successful summers run is anticipated. Leased. The Citizens mill at Austin lias been leased for a term of years, and wll be started up in a short lime on ore from the Plumas mine at Galena, the owner ot that mine having agreed to furnish sullicient ore to keep the mill steadily employed. The ore will be hauled in teams from the mine to Galena station, on the line ot the Nevada Central, a distance of some six miles, and shipped to Austin on the cars. As the ore is exceedingly rich it is expected that it will pay big, and as ihc mill s is there is a good prospect lor a long 15-sfam- p first-clas- run. Silverado District, Silver Qitkrn. The Sentinel says that the Jones Eros, have struck a body of ore about a foot in width and is widening as development is made. They have taken out a ton and a half of very rich ore. Union District. The Eureka Sentind says Union District is coming to the lront again, and ihc mining outlook is very battering. Messrs. Grubbs & Clark are making a shipment of three car loads of ore from thciMiiinc to one of the reduction works in Eureka. The ore is now being loaded at Mineral Station. It is carbonate and resembles very closely the ores of Kilby Ilill. If this experiment is satisfactory other shipments from Union will follow. There are a number ot good mines in that district which only need a little aid to place them on a paying basis. Esmeralda District, In noticing the mines of this district the lkrahl says: Northern Hki.le. Work progresses in the south drilt, which is being run to connect with the American Companys ground. Good ore is being extracted from' the drift. Heal Dkl Monte. Sinking in the shaft is pushed as rapidly as possible. (ialniH District. New Conukntkatino Mill. The fine new concentrating mill, owned by the Montrose Mill and Mining Company, of New York, says the Mfxsen(ej of the 7ih, siarted up on Tuesday last, on ore from tne Avalanche and Veatris mines, and is working well. A hatch of ore was )Ut through the mill which assayed $51 on the dump, and after being concentrated went $105, leaving the tailings without a trace of metal in them. The mill woiks to a charm, and is a complete success irotn the Mart. A shipment of some fifteen tons of concentrations will be made to Salt Lake in about ten days. UTAH. Uintah District The Salt Lake Tribune contains an interest, ing article in regard to this star property. It sa) s : On the new shaft of the Ontario the force is at present engaged in culling out a station on the t level, preparatory to putting in in the hdgu ami sinking for the pumps, cut level. The old shaft, south of the new one, and down 500 feet, has five stations, 100 ieet apart. In sinking the new shaft it was not necessary to dig out any sta ions until a point was reached lower han the usual block of ground to stopc, 100 feet, and now from the level down the new shaft, stations will he placed every 100 ieet apart. The heaviest pumps in the mine arc in the 500 foot level up 800-foo- 800-foo- t (JOO-fo- ot level, where it passes out through the Union Tunnel to the surface. One pump shaft also throws water to the in the level. The other small pump in the new shaft throws to the heavy pumps on the old shafr, a connection being made between the shafts. On the 700 foot level, as soon as the station is cut, a heavy Knowles pump is to be placed, and is intended to do duty until the Cornish plunger is ready to take its and the other pumps places. This plunger will be in place this tail ami some idea of its magnitude can be formed from the fact that it will cost, at the lowest estimate, $150,000. It is a vast piece of machinery which lifts water from level to level, and with ech motion of the plunger the water on each level is taken up to the next where it is received by tanks. It will require an engine of 150 horse power to do the woik. In order to furui-- steam for lifting the ore, waste and water from this great fissure, there time twelve large are at the present use in in the Territory. boilers, the largest As depth is acquired the ore keeps getting baser and richer, but at the mill there have been erected the most approved furnaces lorchlorodizing the ores. One fact in connection with the Ontario we believe lias never been made public. Although this property lias had an output of $1,000,000 to its credit, it is nevertheless a fact that in all its history there has never been a time when more than 25 picks were in ore. Indeed, it costs more than twice as much to' take the waiter out of the mine as it does to extract the ore and mill it. The machinery employed io do both is considered by mining men the nrnst perfect in the world. There are at the mill 0,000 tons of ore held as a reserve, so that in case any mishap should occur, either to the to the 100-foo- (JOO-fo- 100-fo- t ot ot h machinery at the mine, such us a breakage of any of the pump columns, nr cave in the shaft, the mill can keep steadily at its work grinding out the bullibn until the necessary repairs have been made. The mill, as is well known, is one of forty stamps with a capacity of taking care to sixty tons per day. This of from filty-fiv- e amount is easily ex1ra2ted. and Mr. Kerwin, foreman of the underground works, says that it is only childs pay for him to supply an mill, with theore bodies already in 6ight, lor three years to come. The company have a sawT mill at the mine for framing timber, making and cutting wedges, aud sawing up all ilie lumber that is used arouud the works. The outside work is uuder lie management of Mr. Corral. The mill is under the geuial Joe Gallagher, who is fact becoming one ot the best mill men on the coast. 80-stam- p 1 firmly believe that at sufficient depth an immense mine will be proven. We advise every one holding stock to pay their assessments cheerfully, as they will see the stock rise ih no great time. Barrios. The Harrois Company arc working eight men, sinking a prospecting shaft on the first hill cast of the Ontario. It is now down ninety feet. The vein was cut near the surface, dipping to the north. Ten feet more and a drift will be run noyth to cross-cu- t the vein. It is too much to expect a pay body of ore at that depth, but it is altogether possible, and the vein will be proven at all events. Four shafts have been sunk between the Switzerland tunnel and the present works, a short distance apart, and all show the vein. The Switzerland tunnel is run into the hill a distance of 100 feet to the vein. The foot wall is very true and smooth at this point. The vein is then followed cast sonic distance, showing in places rich streaks of black sulphurcts assaying very high, but not in paying quantities. At the cast end this drift is connected with a incline on the to all vein the the surface. shaft, way The dump shows sulphurets and chlorides. Then comes lie prospecting shafts we spoke of further east, all showing the vein, the last one, a distance of probably G00 feet, being the present works. If a pay body is not cut on the 100 level, it is pretty sure that pay streaks will be found, and hence it will be only a question of depth. Should this prove to tie the true Ontario vein concerning which the owners have no shadow of doubt, it will be proven by connecting in time with the upper levels of the Ontario. Ontario. The station at the 700 level in the Ontario is about half finished. A new Knowles pump, plunger, has been ordered for this station. It will he a duplicate of the present mammoth pump at the 500 station, old shaft. The latter is to be changed to a plunger, thus adding about sixty gallons minute to its capacity. The vein on the per 700 level will not be cut until the new pump arrives. The road between the mine ami mill is being repaired, aud when completed will bo the best canyon road in Utah. The bullion output this month bids fair to rival that of last month. Another year and the present dividend of 50 cents will undoubtedly be doubled. Glenco. A force of uicn are busy on the Glen co. A tunnel was first run into the hill about 100 feet west, then a drift was run south to the vein where the first slrike was made. It was continued for twenty-livfeet through vein matter and ore. A drift will now be run west along the course of the vein. When in another 100 feet it will again be crosscut south, when it is thought a line large vein will be shown. Hawk eye. Patrick Feeney and Jas. OConnor nave the contract for sinking the lluwkryc shatt. They commenced this morning. The framework ot the hoisting works is completed and all the machinery is in place. A large force of masons, machinists and carpenters have been kept at work, and everything has been pushed as fast as it was possible to do. IIevelator. A contract has been let for feet. There sinking the Bevciator twenty-fivis a smaL seam of rich ore, in a four-incvein, which has come in in the last few feet, and is now widening. All taken out so far has been sacked. It is thought a pay body will be struck Within ten feet, as only a few inches will pay. Parleys Park. Hoar and Hichards have taken the contract for sinking the Parleys Park shaft. The first contractors were forced to give it up. Kennedy was up during the week arranging matters. Little Mao. We are reliably informed that work on the Little Mac is soon to commence. A company is to be formed. This excellent property will no doubt be a credit to our camp ere long. Arriving Ore from the Boss and Walker & Buckeye continues to arrive at the smelter. 100-fo- i t I i 2 J i t i i i i i I : ot V V 14-inc- li 15-inc- h S tl O T 0 o (J e A few of the mines in this district are tioned by the Record of Saturday men- : On the 200 west we found a fine body of ore which a force of men have just began to take out, and good looking ore it is. The pay streak is between two and three feet, and apparently widening. Descending to the o00 level, we followed the drift east about 100 feet, where a porphyry horse had been encountered. The drift here turned to the south for a Empire distance of 100 feet. Here we found the latest aud undoubtedly the best strike that has ever bein made in llie mine. The vein is somewhat broken, but carries considerable quantities of black sulphureis, from which quite a number of assays a high as $t00, and one of $2,000 have been made. The extent of the ore body on the vein it is impossible to estimate, but ihere are no signs as yet of it pinching out, and it is altogether probable that it will be a large body. At the 400 level we found the enlargement ot the s ation completed, making one of ihe finest we have ever seen anywhere. The new Worthington pump is in place, and will be raising its J50 gallons per minute in a few days. The drilt lias not yet reached the vein but is very near it. It will be cut as soon as the pump is ready tor the additional water which will be met. The masonry for tlie ore house is going up and we arc satisfied the building will be completed none too soon. We have never lost confidence in the Empire, and F T Tl Tt Ot e h Ve TL Ft Tl J2i Tw Tb Fo Tv On Fo Tv On Fo |
