He noted that rearrangements in Defense spending allocations had left the Depot relatively untouched whereas some major installations, such as that at Spokane, were being planned for eventual shutdown. Clearfield has been selected as the Depot from which the final Spokane dispositions of Naval supplies will be made. At the Roy meeting, Senator y Watkins told his audience that by fully developing the natural resources of the area, residents of the strategic northern Utah section can do their part to keep America strong. Not only does 1957 mark the first year in which delivery of water is being made from the Weber Basin Project but also the year in which appropriations for the $70 million Project passed the half-wamark. To date, Senator Watkins said, $36.6 million has been appropriated for Weber Basin Project construction, $6.5 million of that amount this year. George D. Clyde addressed the Utah Federation of Women's Republican Clubs, Saturay, Oct. 5. Gov. Clyde emphasized the need for close cooperation between federal and state agencies and stressed the necessity of lo- cal efforts - if the Republican party is to fully accomplish its aims. No Tax Increase In explaining why no major tax increase was voted by the last legislature, he pointed out that at the beginning of the current biennium the state had 16 milrelion dollars in a serve fund, which was really a surplus in the tax funds. To rect these funds into the channels for- - which they were intended the legislature determined to use them to absorb part of the costs of government. Hence no major tax increase was needed to balance the budget. An anticipated increase in funds available to the state in the next biennum should obviate the need for any large tax inNotice is hereby given that the crease two years hence, the Govapplication of SEEWES RETAIL ernor pointed out. This totals $16 million ,the same surplus which was available this year to the legislature. Last Legislature With respect to the spending of the last legislature the governor pointed out that every Utah legislature has spent more than its predecessors, and the expanding nature of the states economy demands such expenditures. The Governors speaking calendar has been full for the past several weeks and no let up is in sight. He spoke at the Nevada Water Conference at Carson City, Nevada, on Oct. 3rd. Because of travel he was represented at two talks this week, one at the Youths Fitness Conference, Oct. 10, which Secretary of State Lamont Toronto addressed, and the other, also on the 10th, to the Teen Age Traffic Conference and School Driving Training Program, where John Talmage spoke on behalf of the Governor. two years; by 1959 half-milli- on ( |
