Two Killed In N. M. Mine Shaft Bureau Mew Mexico Two men were killed and three injured Tuesday when a cage-typ- e elevator plummeted down a shaft being sunk for the National Potash Co. east of Carlsbad, N.M. State Mine Inspector John Garcia said that a safety device had been removed from the elevator only minutes before it dropped approximately 250 feet. Garcia was continuing investigations of the accident at the site. He said that the three-tiere- d elevator had been equipped with a crosshead safety catch last September which was in use when the elevator first began hauling the five men from the bottom of shaft. a 625-foEn route to the top Garcia said, the cage began binding on one side of the shaft. While the cage was stopped momentarily to stop the binding, someone apparently removed the device which Garcia- said would have kept the cage from dropping more than 10 feet when a cable broke. Those killed outright were Buford Wright, 30, and Billy Littlefield, 29. Billy Jurney, 30, and Peter E. Hautamaki 25, were reported in critical condition in a Carlsbad hospital Wednesday. Dick Morris, 30, was reported in good condition. New Mexicos last fatal mining New Mexico Bids For Process Mill Kerr-McGe- NELL Dated: December 8, 1955. RAY S. Instead of using the traditional steel tanks, the Creole Petroleum Corporation has scooped out a great earthen pit. The pit, costing more than a million dollars holds 3,500,000 barrels of oil. Covering nearly thirty acres, the basin provides the first outdoor storage facildike. ities in Venezuela. It is five feet deep and is encircled by a excavation. AccordConstruction took three months of around-the-cloc- k ing to company officials, oil can be stored in the big pit at a cost of about 80 cents a barrel compared with $1.65 to $2.00 for storage in tanks. Before going ahead with the new project, experts were called in from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. They discovered that the clay of Amuay, Venezuela, was of sufficient consistency to keep oil from seeping through. Outdoor storage has another advantage: It will enable the company to maintain normal refinery operations during the slack summer months. Creole is the Venezuelan affiliate of the Standard Oil Company (NJ.). Denison Pleads No Contest New Mexico Bureai Alvis Denison of Albuquerque, N.M., was assessed $50 District Court costs after pleading no contest to a charge of violation of the mining code. Denisons attorney said that the original copy of required statistical information on Densons La Jara Mine near Grants apparently did not reach the mining inspector. He said that the reports are up to date now as required by law. Navajo Call for Realty Assistant Be Well Informed GET THE FACTS!
