Needs Cooperation NEWS TAKING A The success of any government program conducted wholly on a voluntary basis must be measured by the cooperation it receives from the public. This is the clue to the answers of many questions now being asked by persons in the minerals industry who are questioning the future of the government sponsored programs. C. O. Mittendorf, administrator of the Defense Minerals Exploration Administration told members of the American Mining Congress in Las Vegas that this cooperation was an essential contributing factor to the longevity of such programs. The government has a long range goal of planning mines in the future. This can only be done through a broad continuing program of exploration, pursued in order to assure a string and healthy domestic industry which can be depended on in times of national emergency. Mittendorf gave the public more meat to (hew when he said DMEAs function is to encourage private industry to carry on such a program." He further outlined how the increasing DMEA had aided this program in thePpast. A total of 2,812 applications were received from the government by Sept. 30, 1955 proposing exploration work to cost more than $130 million. Since the beginning of the program in 1951, a total of 822 exploration project contracts have been executed; 255 contracts are still in operation, and the remaining 597 contracts have been terminated. , Certifications of discovery or development have been issued on 212 DMEA contract covering projects. More than $1 million has been repaid in royalties on production from exploration project and ore reserves conservatively valued at more than $225 million have been revealed. During the year ending Sept. 30, 1955 applications filed with DMEA exceed those filed the previous 12 month period by almost 60 per cent. This is what the government has been doing to increase and stimulate the exploration programs during the past four years The government will continue such programs as long as the interest prevails and the work is performed, Mittendorf promised. There are many unanswered questions in regard to the governments future plans questions which will take time to answer. The fining industry will hurt itself by getting too impa tient if the other programs are run on the same basis as DMEA. Cooperation and continued high interest would seem a determin ing factor in how the government mind is swayed in guaranteeing the mining industry the backing and support it needs in the Apex, Uran.
