Show Page Two The Western Mineral Survey. Salt Lake City. Utah EDITORIAL Veto A Death Knell? In recent issues of the Survey news releases have carried information about organizations geared to protect the mining industry in national affairs. The recent veto of the bill which could have continued the governments special purchase of minerals for defense stockpile gives them something to work on. New Mexico alone stands to lose about $1,000 a month in royalties as the result of the veto. Small operations producing manganese, beryl, mica and rare earth minerals are concerned. The New Mexico Land Office feels the veto rings a death knell for the states small manganese industry within six months Other western states small industries are faced with the same problems. President Eisenhowers plan to study, a long range program for producers is good. It will bring stability long needed. But the most immediate problem facing the mining industry is how to aid the small industries until this new stable program goes into effect. This is an issue to be studied carefully and be dealt with constructively by the industry's protective agencies August 19. 1955 National Firms File In N. Davis announced today that the Bureau of Mines soon will call fr bids for constructing a $6,000,000 helium plant at Exell, Tex., to increase output of this lightweight, nonflammable gas by approximately 50 percent. With a rating of 100 million cubic feet of helium a year, the new installation will boost the Bureaus capacity to approximately 300 million cubic feet annually, Acting Secretary Davis said. Helium is found in small quantities in certain natural gases in this country and is extracted by special methods developed by the Bureau of Mines, sole large-scal- e producer in the world. Exell already is the site of an plant which, during World War II, helped supply the Armed Forces with helium required for lifing blimps and balloons. The Bureau also has plants at Amarillo, Tex., Otis, Kans., and near Ship-roc- k, N. M. The newest plant at Exell probably will enable the Bureau to meet demands untiri959 or 1960. After that, still another plant may be required, the Bureau es" timates. A site near Keyes, Okla., was considered before Exell was decided upon, the Acting Secretary disclosed, and this continues to be very attractive to the Bureau of Mines He expressed hope that a plant ultimately can be built at Keyes to take advantage of this important source of helium- -bearing natural gas. Demand for helium has continued to soar and the Bureau has been forced to curtail some uses. However, because of im- Rimrock Uranium Mine Officials Okeh Claim Colorado d helium-bearin- g full-scal- e one-hal- n Edge-mon- Subscribe Klml Interested In Uranium Activities ? proved techniques, plant equipment frequently operates at far above rated capacity.
