THOMAS, Yankee to Drill; Gets DMEA Loan Backing Yankee Uranium Co., Salt Lake City, will start drilling operations on the West Paradox claims in Montrose county, Colo., due to approval of a DMEA loan, George A. Chase, general manager said today. The company feels prospects for a major discovery on the property are excellent, Chase reports. He noted that the land is west of the Radium cycle and Valley View mines which have been reopened and are now producing. W. Don Quigley is employed by Yankee as consulting geolo gist. Other company claims include the Gabarino property on which Yankee and Price Exploration have drilled out a $40,000 ore body on the Redbird claim. The Redbird and adjacent Yellowbird are still largely untested and un drilled, Chase said. The company lists 142 claims owned. On the advice of Geolo gist Quigley the company sold the Double Jack mine for $25,000. The Island Mesa claims, north of the Slick Rock district, was recently acquired. A half interest was sold to Price Exploration for survey and assessment work. Widespread interest in the exploration program is indicated by. the fact that 22 states are represented in the 139 new applications, the largest number of ap plications received in any quarter in the last two years, DMEA Administrator C. O. Mittendorf said. The applications range from a request for support of a $1,845 mica project in North Carolina to a $422,300 uranium project in Utah. The total estimated cost for 136 of these projects is $7,244,675 three applicants stating no amount. During the April-Jun- e period, 35 contracts for exploration proj ects were formally executed be tween the government and the operators, making a total of 767 since the start of the program. Work authorized in the 35 new contracts, together with that specified in amendments execut ed during the quarter, was estimated to cost $1,498,315. of which the maximum amount of government participation was set at $952,961. June saw the execution of 17 contracts the greatest number since October 1953. Largest of the new contracts provided for a $303,200 lead-zin- c project in Nevada and the small est for a $3,688 North Carolina mica project. 1955. executed during the quarter, 32 others had been approved by the DMEA and were in the hands of the operators for signature as of June 30, 1955. The estimated cost of the exploration work entailed in these 32 additional project ap- provals is $1,073,073. During the past quarter, 16 certifications of discovery or development were issued by the DMEA bringing the total of certifications to 201. Total estimated cost of the 201 proects is $9,138,706, of which the maximum government com- mitment is $5,703,081. Only $4,394,059 of government funds had been paid on all certified projects as of June 30, 1955; however, 15 of them are still proceeding and additional expenditures may be anticipated. The value of the ore inferred on these certified projects is conservatively estimated by the DMEA staff at $216,000,000. Ore showings have been reported on 60 projects in addition to the 201 that already have been certified, Secretary McKay said, making a total of mately $16,500,000.
