Operation during the entire winter season without a shutdown is planned. The ore bins are to be 25 feet wide by 100 feet long. Officials are now working on the water project. An ample supply of clear water will guarantee a 500 ton daily production. Begun as a small proect, the enterprise has now evolved into a major upgrading venture. An additional refining unit for copper ore is one of the important future expansion factors contemplated, according to Western Hemisphere officials. This is based somewhat on activities the past few days south of Old Baldy Mountain, where George Gibbs reported a geological crew, manned by the Charles A. Steen interests is acquiring blanket claims through the area. Beaver is rapidly acquiring recognition as the uranium center of the south Utah district. The new mill at Beaver, is designed, according to the builders to work low grade ore and produce a commercial product equaling higher grade ore and at small additional cost. Emil Somerhalder, field superintendent of Western Hemisphere Mills, Inc., discussing the project, said the perennial dream of the uranium industry is to discover a new method and have a mill and a process that will immediately demonstrate its superiority over existing methods and therein fulful the dreams of most mill men. Sewell, president of the company, J. W. Bartlett, vice president in charge of engineering, Fred F. Sewell, vice president and manager of manufacturing and Cecil Robinson, chief geologist, flew in from Dallas. The party Inspected potash leases in the Seven mile area Saturday. Potash test holes four and five were underway this week. The company officials made no comment on plans for production of potash. The men and their wives returned to Dallas Sunday. 10c Fez Copy Tear $3.00 Tnungle Hits Jackpot Ore deliveries are to be accepted starting next Tuesday, August 9, at the huge upgrading mill, near Beaver, Utah, erected by Western Hemisphere Mills, Inc., and almost completed and ready for operation. Ore bins are now under con- struction at the site. One Salfclakc City, Utah Angnit 5, 1955 Triangle Uranium received the above assay report this month and immediately started mining for the rich copper indicated at their Strawberry Mine in Weber County. The assayer told George T. Sugihara, president, they could run mining operations on money received from silver and iron in the ore body. Southern Utah Producer Has 9 Million Feet of Gas Gulf Oil Co. anonunced one.- pf the biggest oil and gas discoveries in the history of the Rocky Mountain oil fields - today. ' of The discovery well which had an initial 2,040 pounds per square P.SJ. is 10 miles southeast of Mon-ticell- o and 12 miles south of the spot where White Canyon Uraninm made its recent big gas-o- il discovery. The dril stem set was open for one hour and access to the surface was accomplished in 2V6 minutes. The final recording was 2,040 pounds after it was shut-i- n for 30 minutes, that much pressure having been built up after the shut-i- n got started. Gulf officials termed it a "significant showing." Other oil sources in Salt Lake City described it as a tremendous disunit with 9,000,000 cubic feet of covery. It is in the coal-be- d indicated. gas per day Coincidentally, officials of White Canyon disclosed they are now making tests on their first discovery well and are also drilling another well hole. Betties said Uranium Discovery and Development Co., Wallace, Idaho and Uranium Prince are two of the primary companies. The third operating firm, a nationally known company, will be announced next week. Facts on all properties, potentials and future mining operations will- also be told, Betties said. Both of the above companies are under Raleigh Bruning, Wallace mining executive. UD & D was oversubscribed with 500,000 shares sold Friday. Uranium - Prince, underwritten by Denver, has only 250,000 shares left of 1,500,000 offered. Name of the national firm to sign with Betties cannot be announced until lawyer completes legal transactions. "However, Betties said, the com tracts have been approved by officers and directors of all three Berk-meye- companies." r, Acquisition of important mining properties in Africa, Australia and Peru by Standard Ore and Alloys and its mining subsidiaries was reported today by Howard S. Strouth, chief of the companys! mining division. The new acquisitions include the purchase in the Union of South Africa of the Palmist Chrome Mine at Rustenburg in thq Transvaal. The mine is presently producing 1000 tons per. month of high grade lump chromite and concentrates. Present plans call for additional mechanization and Increase of tonnage to 4000 tons per month, as well as a drilling program to increase present reserves to several million tons. In Australia, the acquisition is announced of 1100 acres of a heavy sand deposit containing monazite and rutile near Fort Marquarie, New South Wales. An extensive drilling and pitting program is now under way (See STANDARD Page 2) Earth Minerals t The old adage "when it rains it pours applies to Triangle Uranium Corp. this week, but it brought nothing but good. Road building has been completed and four miners will start to work. He added that compressors and other equipment is being brought in from the Yellow Cat claims in Moab to work the location. rJ1,lr, In discussing the copper strike, Sugihara quoted A. M. Reynolds, former Anaconda employee now in charge of mining operations for Triangle, as saying he thought the deposit was shaped by a thermal upheaval. We may have another Anaconda, he added. Mr. Reynolds has investigated the property and noted that native copper lays below an upper layer of near surface copper. The size of the copper body Is undetermined, Sugihara said. Triangle also has three copper locations in Franklin county, hydro-- Near Heber Uranium came to the back door of Salt Lake City this week with reports of high grade ore in the Midway and Alta districts near Ileber, Utah. Reports came Jrom officials of Cardiff Mining C6. and Sun Uranium Corp., who said scintillometer readings in the area showed the ore intensity over a second reading on the machine.. Sun Uranium Corp., also re- ports they have obtained a lease on 1600 acres of property at Midway. Sun officials said the deposit indicates a possible high grade thermal deposit of a fissure vein similar to some encountered at Marysvale, Utah and Saskatchewan, Canada. New Uranium Association Speeds Membership Drive A newly organized uranium association this week is con- ducting an intensive membership drive in southeastern Utah. The Uranium Association of America, an organization formed to act as spokesman for the uranium industry as a national body, will extend its membership drive to major Utah and Colorado cities in the near future. Jack Turner, uranium mine operator, is serving as temporary president of the organization with Sam Constantino, Jr., Moab, as secretary of the membership drive. According to Turner, the organization now has offices in Washington, D.C. and Salt Lake City. These offices will aid the group in keeping in touch with uranium industry centers, A program has been outlined for the group, Turner announced. Two major objectives of the UAA are, one, to assist in maximum production of uranium ore to aid the U.S. in maintaining world leadership in stockpiling. The second goal of importance is to lend assistance and support to those engaged in mining and production to insure fair and profitable operations. The current southeastern Utah drive will continue for several weeks, Secretary Constantino reports. Mailers sent out include 1,000 form letters, 20,000 membership applications and 20,000 copies of the UAA constitution and Further membership drive plans will be announced by the Survey in the near future. 12-poi- nt by-law- s. |
