Discovery of the ore body in July 1952, the formation of a company to exploit it, and its development into a ore withwas producer accomplished out government financial assistance. The first borehole penetrated high-grad- e ore 14 feet thick, says the report. It was also revealed that later sales were made by Great Britain of the metal in finished products to private sources rather than to the government, which afforded the loan to the titanium company. Rollin Smith, head of Titanium Metals, questioned by Senator Malone, admitted that Titanium Metals is selling large quantities .of the material through its New York offices in fabricated form to Great Britain. The metal is later in finished products from Great Britain, with most of the products going to private firms and little or none to the U. S. government which is underwriting , kLm (Continued on Page 2) Memoir Story Zosell, Montana Mining District Dr. J. R. Van Pelt, Director of the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, announces the release of Memoir 34 by the Bureau of Mines and Geology. This memoir, entitled "Geology and Mineral Deposits of the Zosell (Emery) Mining District, Powell County, Montana" is by Forbes Robertson, Associate Professor of Geology on leave from the Montana School' of Mines. It describes the geology and ore occurrence, in the Zosell or Emery mining district,. which has been a noted producer of ores. The total value of precious and base metals produced is said to be not less than $2,175,000,. but, production has been very intermittent The principal difficulty encountered in operation is said to be the complexity of the ores. , New Tunnel Making Time it Index-Dale- y Property at again . This follows closely the issuance on October 8 of a revised safety code for bituminous coal and lignite mines by the Bu- reau of Mines. The new anthracite code, designed to modernize the safety rules and practices in the anthracite industry and to keep abreast of rapid technological progress made m recent years, takes the place or the old Bureau of Mines "Safety Standards for Anthracite Mines," promulgated in 1948 and used since then as a guide in making Federal inspections. Development of the new anthra- cite code represents many months of study and the joint efforts o the Bureau of Mines, the United Mine Workers of America, and representatives of the Penns'l-vanl- a anthracite operators, Secretary McKay pointed out. and tfc code has been approved by all three groups.
