Employes of the Bureau of Mines mining and demonstration branches received the Department fo the Interiors unit award for meritorious service in recognition of outstanding progress in laying the foundation for a new American industry, based on production of liquid fuels from oil shale. Acting for Interior Secretary Douglas McKay, who signed the citation, J. H. East, Jr., director of the Bureaus Region IV, presented the silver medal and scroll in a brief ceremony held at the oil-sha- le ( Pend Oreille plant near here. oil-sha- le He also presented the depart- ments highest award for individuals the gold medal for distinguished service to Boyd Guthrie, demnostra-tiochief of the branch. ' Guthrie had been unable to attend an honors convocation on May 23 in Washington, oil-sha-le D.: C., n at which his award was announced. The unit citation, for mine and plant employes, one of the few ever granted by the department, read as follows: Through ; diligent effort, frequently beyond the call of duty, employes of these branches have developed a , technology for mining and processing oil shale, and have contributed to science a wealth of new data on engineering and process design. The Mining Branch has developed and demonstrated a highly mechanized method of mining oil shale at very low cost. By tailoring equipment and techniques to the job at hand, volume production has been achieved at unit costs far lower and man-da- y outputs far higher than even the most optimistic forecasts.' e Demonstration The Branch has designed, constructed, and operated units for retorting oil shale and refining shale oil that are adapted to American conditions and can be expanded ' for commercial production.
