R. Sayers, Bureau director. Made at the request of the Metals' Reserve Company, the studies were designed to determine the most effective methods of producing urgently needed commercial-grad- e tin from the Mexican ores. Two of the samples 1 submitted for testing the Naranjo and Sierra Fria ores from the State of Zacatecas contained relatively high percentages of tin, while a third sample the La Frontera ore from the State of Guanajato was comparatively low in tin .. - - 110 xClaytoa Silver , w xColorado Con xColb. These plants are within 75 miles of the mine. Mine Workings The mine is worked through an electrified haulage level, and through several tnousand feet of drills and inclined winzes. The lowest workings of the mine are the approximately 00 feet below ' haulage or 10UO level. Some .water has been encountered below the haulage level, and the workings below the 1200 level are flooded at the present time (1945). Pumping equipment is installed at the mine, and the lower levels can be unwatered readily when it is desirable to do so. Bureau Of Mines Exploration The Bureau of Mines project at the Ophir Hill mine was begun in June 1944 and ended in uune, 1945. The exploration was planned to investigate possible ore occurrences that could be developed and mined quickly for war uses. The exploratory work consistholes ed of drilling 165 core-dri- ll from underground stations. The depths of the holes ranged from 11 to 180 feet. The total distance drilled was 8537 feet. An average of 19.055 feet per drill shift was attained. No cementing or casing was necessary; Approximately 1720 feet of trenching along favorable outcrops was done by mechanical and hand methods. All and mineralized sections of core from the drilling was submitted to the Salt Lake City Division, Metallurgical Branch, for analysis. No metallurgical testing of the ores was done as the ore ' is amenable to treatment at mills and smelters in the vicinity of the mine. In general, the Qphir formation at the Ophir Hill mine is of such character that core drilling results in good core recovery and low' diamond costs. Because of the crushed condition of the rocks in the vicinity of the Cliff fault, core recovery was less and diamond cost more than in other parts of the mine. Because of the abrasive nature of the quartzite, the diamond cost for drilling it was higher than for any of the rocks penetrated, but' the core recovery was very ..... Utah Con. Con. Oil .
