The aeries started May 28 and was climaxed more than four months later. It was marked by a record number of detonations (24) and such firsts as a tunnel shot, balloon-suspende- d blasts, and even a misfire. The AEC, in answer to the thorny question of fallout, announced: Thorough instrumentation offsite disclosed that no populated place received fallout radiation up to the established law safety limit. AEC authorities said that among areas receiving highest radiation were Reveille Mine, . Dodge Construction Camp and the B & M Mine, situated north of the sprawling test site at Yucca Flat, about 85 miles northwest of Las Vegas. A key factor in reducing fallout to negligible traces in 13 shots was the use of plastic balloons to suspend the lethal test devices. Arming of Americas defense warheads was announced earlier this year. The curt AEC test-en- d release directed to development of small stated: The tests were primarily deefnsive weapons. Kyner of Cripple Creek in 1952. Officers now are Luther C. Sayers, president; Bill Ewing, secretary-treasure- r and general manager and R. G. Silvola, vice president. High Grade Ore The ore was taken from a mine near Cripple Creek, on property on the Old Gold Camp road on land leased from Ralph Otto and Associates, according to Ewing. The average mill sample ran a minimum of 10.5 per cent, and no mine on record has been known to exceed that. It is the highest grade of thorium ore ever produced from the earths crust, said Ewing. Most thorium is produced from Africa, India and Brazil, accord-monazit- e sands in Australia, South ing to Ewing and Silvola. Trail Mines also has mining claims in the Hardscrabble mining district between Wetmore and Rosita in Custer and Fremont counties, according to officials. Ore from that area has also been shipped to the mill, they said. Ewing and Silvola said that Gazett- they plan to produce about 500.. tons a month of thorium ore in the near future, and that amount will be about half of the total expected to be produced in Colorado. Thorium ore is found in extruded veins, which run vertically in the earths surface instead of in horizontal veins like many metals, the two men explained. The two men said the company does not have any stock to sell, pointing out that 15 million shares of stock were sold at 1 cent par value in the first years the company was in existence. Kern U-Company Plans to Shaft Kern BAKERSFIELD, Calif. Uranium Co. plans to sink a secon- shaft at its Little Sparkler mine in Kern River Canyon, 45 miles northeast of Bakersfield. Plans call for a jump, putting the second level of the mine at about 160 feet, Lloyd Scouler, president, said. Workers are now drifting both ways from the cross-cu- t leading from the shaft at the level. Drifts are approximately 100 feet in each direction along a and straight fracture with a good hanging wall, Scouler said. The first ore shoot on which the company has a fairly complete analysis shows ore widths running from 10 to 30 inches over a length of 40 feet with the average value running at approximately 1 per cent U308. zones have Other higher-valu- e been opened along the drifts, but full reports are not available yet. Ore appears to be predominantly pitch blende, with less secondary mineralization than was mined from surface outcroppings. Kern Uranium is currently operating two shifts per day with 13 men on the payroll. d-level 100-fo- ot 60-fo- ot well-define- d 6 'I |
