Measured by the best available standards, Brigham Young was a great man. Faults, doubtless, he had a plenty. Rut he was a man of power, of vision, and of accomplishments. At the head of a small band of people possessing no other resources than courage and industry, he created an empire in a barren land and laid the foundations for the prosperity for future generations. One of the best proofs that Brigham was a leader is his policy on amusements. He knew that the problem of recreation was one of vital importance. He realized that leisure, improperly employed, becomes the most baneful influence in life. How did he meet this need for culture and inspiration and stimulating relaxation? By building the Social Hall Theater. There was no delay in providing a place where all could enjoy good music and the beat of plays. The Social Hall Theater was built aa soon as time could be spared from the necessary work of building homes and churches. Hen, plays by Ibsen, Shakespeare, and other great classical authors were presented. As a whole the type of program was probably of a much higher grade than those enjoyed modern age. Mindful of the in Salt Lake in this history and sentiment enshrined in this picturesque building, its significance as the cradle of the arts in the country, in what manner has a grateful generation acted to preserve this edifice and the marvelous spirit it symbolized? By tearing the Social Hall Theater down stick by stick in order that the passerbys view of motor salesrooms and garage might not be obliterated! As soon as time and resources allowed, Brigham Young caused the Salt Lake Theater to be erected to supplement the activity so nobly and auspiciously The best that begun at the Social Hall Theater. the pioneer Territory could afford was put into this structure. Its opening and its consequent operation marked the opening of an important era in this western country. Here the world's greatest singers and actors and actresses thrilled their audiences: Booth, Bernhart, Salvini, Kean, Modjeska, Mrs. Fiske, Ditrichstein, Tatti, Schumajin-HeinCampanini, Plancon, Scotti, Marlowe, Arliss, Henry Miller, Sothem. Hampton! A notable list to conjure from the past, only part of whom have been named. Imbued with the determination and the desire to perpetuate what Brigham Young started, to cherish most tenderly his ideals of recreation, and to build for a race each day more quick to the lure of Truth and Reauty, what has our present generation done? Torn down the structure that had perhaps outlived it8 day and erected on its sacred precincts a structure of marble and granite in grateful recognition of an eternal debt to the pioneers of the past? Nothing of the sort. The historic building, each timber of which was steeped in tradition, has been sold to the wreckers, leveled to the ground, and the whole space dedi far-seei- ng so-call-ed in k, Pfovo Foundry & Machine Co. "Brewsters Millions tells the story of a man who, that he might inherit a vast fortune, had imposed upon him by the will of a fond relative the task of spending a million dollars within the period of one year. He tries every sure fire method for squandering wealth but without success. Everything he touches turns to money. He invests in a luxurious yacht, plays the ponies, backs innumerable dubious enterprises but all pay big returns. Only one known method he did not exploit, that followed by W. A. Clark, Jr., the patron of the Los Angeles Symphony orchestra. Brewster perhaps was not sincere. Or perhaps he lacked foresight. Or after all it may be he was the worlds most successful pinch penny. For Mr. Clark has nt been at the business of backing an orchestra long, yet he has spent his first million dollars in this magnificent undertaking and is said to be on the road to spending his second million. The last tour of this splendid band, which brought it to Salt Lake to play to a handful of people, is costing Mr. Clark at least $40,000. Yet he keeps on. Where have we of the west a more inspiring example of a man standing back of a great project with such single mindedness of purpose d and generosity? No doubt, readers of the Western Mineral Survey will be saying that a mining paper is going out of the way to comment on an event, whose value was mainly cultural. But the endowment of the Los Angeles Symphony orchestra by Mr. Clark has a very definite hook-u- p with mining. It is the money from the Senator W. A. Clark miningproperties that has made possible the Los Angeles Symphony. We regret that more mining operators of Mr. Clark's lofty musical aspirations have not become millionaires. We have a sneaking idea that if enough people could be induced to bear such a concert as that given in Salt take last week by Conductor Alfred Hertz and his men, we would be nearer A world no more a market place, but made A Vineyard, and a garden and a Bchool. No one could listen to music that held one entranced, hpnotized, powerless to breathe or move without being materially benefited. Such an inspired and glowing performance aa that given by Mr. Hertz and orchestra on the occasion of last week places this organization in the forefront of the worlds orchestras and ranks Mr, Hertz among the greatest of the great. Of course, anything said in favor of the Los Angeles Symphony orchestra is praise of Mr. Clark for the orchestra is his child. The good achieved by Mr. Clarks upbuilding of a great orchestra in the west can never be estimated. He hag brought to countless men and women and childred happiness, beauty, and inspiration that would never have been theirs had he not lived and sacrificed hia wealth for a lofty purpose. If anyone should ask our opinion, we would reply that auch a life ia our idea of a great and useful life and that at the end when the Book of Life is opened to ascertain "whom the love of God1 had blessed the name of William Andrew Clark, Jr., will be found to have long been among those who "led all the rest. 1.k c.paer Alta Tunnel Indian Pm ...e. ....). 4-- 1 -- t Med-Jldl- 4-- 4-- Inspects Mine. 4-- 4-- On Monday, Frrd W.
