Show 2 The Western Mineral Surrey, Salt Lake City, Utah Oil Results Favorable in Basin Area Uranium Land Titles Moab, Utah. Development and production of uranium mines in the Moab area received a body blow this week when it became known that an amendment to the federal leasing act, passed in 1946, casts a cloud over the title to ownership of hundreds of Halms in this district. The amendment, which reserves to the United States government all fissionable materials found in land covered by oil and gas leases, wiirapply to a vast number of lode claims located in good faith by prospectors and miners. For some reason unknown, the existance of the amendment on the federal statutes was kept secret for six years. In the meantime, prospectors and, miners, acting in good faith, have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars locating and developing properties, building access roads, mining and shipping ore. and in other wys making extensive preparations to aid in the nations production of atomic minerals so badly needed in defense and industry. Unless congress passes remedial legislation to nullify or modify the amendment, hundreds of miners and prospectors and several large, companies, will lose vast sums of money already invested in tlheir claims. In many cases, absolute bankruptcy will result. The whole situation smells to high heaven. Government bureaucracy, it appears to us, has got to the point where the inherent rights of the common citizens are no longer considered. The prospectors built the west The privilege made possible by thie mining laws which the prospector could go into the hills and gamble his time and money in an effort to add to his and incidentally the nations wealth has long been about the only right left to the common man.
