Show Premium Veto Causes Stir In Mining From (Continued Page 1) mining industry and has channelled many millions of dollars al into the machines of the race tracks Future Hope For -mining industry has been noted for its adaptability to varying conditions. When the going gets tougher, they can be depended upon to dig a little deeper. Their resourcefulness to meet changing conditions will successfully , confront this situation. Mines that have sacrificed their developed ore reserves to patriotic prosecution of the war will continue to explore, develop and produce by their rugged individualistic leadership. Sound advice to the mine in- vestors may.be not to sell your stock just because of the end of subsidy. There is still a great demand for metals. The industry with a free market will meet the demand and when readjustments have been made we may be forced to 6ay that discontinuance of the subsidy was a good thing. pari-mutu- -- : non-ferro- us Copper .Profits. Problematical Says Executive HOUGHTON, Mich. Calumet & Hecla Cons. Copper Co. and subsidiaries report for six months ended June 30:. Earned per share, 1947, 66c; 1946, 25c. Metal sales, 1947, $ 13,307,307; 1946, $8,608,918. Net profit 1947, , - . $1,371,734; 1946, $525,028. E. R. Lovell, president, . said results for the first half of 1947 were satisfactory. He added that during the second half of the year moderate earnings are expected from the companys Wolverine tube division and from secondary operations. Concerning production, of primary copper at the Calumet division, he said that profits are problematical because of pending wage increases, the sharp advances in the prices of coal and other supplies, and increases in freight rates. Since the price of copper is already high and probably will not be advanced, increases in operating costs must be absorbed with adverse effects on profits, Lovell said. 01 Test at Vernal Holds Public Interest ed . . . sub-surfa- ce sub-surfa- ce Diamond Drilling Exposing Ore KELLOGG, Idaho Under the direction of toe U. The syndicate is owned by Ed 'Hughes of Jens, William and CarL Jensen, of Seattle, and James L. Leonard of Spokane. Watched with considerable interest by oil men throughout the Intermountain area is the test of the Vernal Oil Dome cura rently being projected by "the Vernal Oil & Gas Company, recently organized Utah corporation. The above photograph of the structure which is located some six miles northwest of the town of Vernal, Utah, presents an interesting study of the dome. In the center of the picture one can see the. white smoke and steam coming from the companys boiler. Crest of the structure can alto be seen a short distance to the left of the boiler smoke. To the' right of the smoke, a few hundred feet, is shown the 97 foot steel derrick now being utilized for drilling the new test. The massive formation in the background is the sandstone Navajo cross-beddshowing this, formation dipping down to the left. - These - dips alsa. form "the closure -- of -- the structure to the , north which is the short closing side of the structure. To the right end of the picture ' one can see the. same formations dipping down in a southerly direction. These dips continue for many miles and it is believed that this condition should form the principal drawing ground or accumulation area of oil for the structure with a closure of possibly six or seven thousand feet. . The contact of the Chinle formation, which is at the base of toe Navajo sandstone, can not be seen on account of the trees which line toe banks of Ashley Creek. The geologic section published in toe July 18 issue of this paper was platted from the dips of toe Navajo sandstone and along toe major axis of the Vernal Dome. This section is also approximately at right angles to the Navaas shown in toe jo sandstone ' picture. Trend of the major axis bears Westerly and Easterly from toe apex of the structure.
