Hardy, was effected recently in Carson City, at a meeting of the state ; advisory mining board, it is reported 'in the Pioche Record. Henry M. Rivers was named secretary of the new group, and George B. Thatcher was named legal consultant. ' Formation of the committee was suggested by Mr. Hardy. The mining and metallurgical research will be conducted under the auspices of the Mackay SchooL of Mines. A program committee to find ways and means of achieving objectives 'of the research group was appointed. Members of this committee include Mr. Hardy, William Donovan, J. A. Buehler, J. P. Hart, George W. Mitchell, W. S. Larsh and Robert H. Tonopah Mining Seen ' The 90c silver ounce has refor price per sulted in greater activity in this famous silver and gold mining area. C. A WASHINGTON, senate banking and currency subcommittee began consideration of the extension of the governments authority to operate the .Texas City tin smelter. The smelter, the only one of its kind in the western hemisphere, is at present run by the RFC under legislative authority which expires June 30. The smelter produced an average of about 3850 long tons each month in 1946. There are large tin smelters in Malaya, Dutch East Indies, England and Holland. Senator Bricker of Ohio chairman 'of the subcommittee, said there apparently was no controversy over the need to extend the governments authority, at least during the period of short tin supply. . It is reported lere that the Getchell Mines, Inc., in which Newmont Mining Corp. holds 18.6 per cent interest, will soon ' reopen its gold mine near Golconda. The property has a 1000-to- n cyanide plant and the ore carries arsenic as well as the yellow metal. The mill is being . enlarged from a daily tonnage .of 1000 to 1500. Used for production of metals other than gold during the war years, the Getchell mine is an enormous' potential producer of tbs yellow metal. The ore is base and carries considerable , realgar arsenic, which in the past interfered with gold recovery. It . is reported, however, that as a result of experiments and a series of tests carried over a long period, a process has been evolved which' carries off the arsenic by flotation. The arsenic is. not a waste product in any sense, but is saved and sold to .industrial users. Ore- milled in ths past was mined by open-p- it methods, as the big vein not only shows a surface width of 50 to 150 feet, but crops prominently for along distance. A new shaft was recently sunk to a depth of 300 feet and it is presumed at least part of future tonnage will come from this shaft. The ore in the shaft is said to average from $7 to $9 in gold and the Getchell vein was passed up by prospectors and locators for many years because of the fact the ore will not show colors in the pan. . Some 400 men will be emin mine and mill opce ployed full-sca- le operations are again under way. Jack Davis, for some, years superintendent of the West End mill, in TonoDah, is superintendent at the Getchell mine. The mill on what is known as the Riley ..property, owned by United States Vanadium, three miles south of the Getchell mine, is not operating at present- - A new shaft is being sunk on the property, it is reported. U. S. Vanadium is treating most of its own tungsten concentrates as well as concentrates purchased from other Nevada producers, in a big plant located on property of Basic Magnesium near Las Vegas. U. S. Vanadium is a unit of Union Carbide, one of the big industrial concerns of the country. A variety of refined tungsten products are produced at the BMI installation and a fleet of big trucks was used to deliver the concentrates from the Riley mine mill, passing daily through Tonopah, when the mill was in operation. . - . - three-compartm- ent Iron Ore Production of Iron ore Increased in all districts during March, 1947, and resulted in 10 percent increase over February, according to the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of tile Interior. Production in March totaled 2,846,168 gross tons compared with 2,590,928 tons in February. Shipments' increased in most districts, although a sharp drop was reported from Western mines. Shipments increased 8 per cent over February and amounted to gross tons; in February shipments were 1,322,123 tons, The increases were proportions to the lengths of the respective month Vest and to again enrich mankind.
