For AMC Meet Some 2,000 mining industry leaders are expected to attend the western metal mining sessions of the American Mining Congress in Salt Lake City. Sept. 9-1- 1 This announcement was made by Julian D. Conover, executive vice president of the AMC. The meetings at Newhouse Hotel and Hotel Utah will be preceded by two days of preliminary sessions and followed by a day of field trips to mine and metallurgical facilities in the state. Shell Oil Co. announced it had converted its Tohonadle No. 1 wildcat in San Juan County segment of Paradox Basin into a producer. The new field discovery is the western-mos- t pool brought in to date in the booming basin. Significantly, the wildcat is but a few miles southeast of acreages which the Navajo Tribal Council, Window Rock, Ariz., intends to put up for competitive lease bid 1,450-banrel-a-d- about Nov. 15. Shell has under leases four sections in the vicinity of the pool. The area also is near the Bluff Bench Unit of the Carter Oil Co. and the Three States Natural Gas Co. Carter contributed to the wildcat test by Shell. Location of the Tohonadle No. 1 is 660 feet from the south line and 1,980 feet from the east line of Section 35, Township 41 South and Range 21 East. Galen Sturgeon, Shells Salt Lake division manager, said the test was taken in an area in the feet. Hermosa section, 4,990-5,05- 0 The perforations were treated and regular with both mud-aci- d acid applied under pressure. The well commenced flowing after a few initial runs of the swabbing tools and during the 8 hour initial production rate, made oil aft rate of 1,450 barrels a day. The test, Mr. Sturgeon said, was in the area of an earlier drill stem test which produced at rate of 528 barrels of oil daily. Shell currently is drilling Tohonadle No. 2 as a pool confirmation effort.
