Report Tells Of Decrease i Computation of Ferrous Materials Decreased During February 1957 As there were fewer working days during Februay, the consumption of ferrous materials, scrap and pig iron, decreased 9 percent, although the daily consumption rate increased slightly over the previous month, according to preliminary data prepared by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior. The total melt (11,913,000 gross tons) consisted of 50.7 percent scrap and 49.3 percent pig iron compared with 50.6 percent and 49.4 percent, respectively, in January. Scrap and pig iron consumed for all purposes totaled thousand and 5,870 thousand gross tons, respectively, each decreasing 9 percent from the previous month. 6,-0- Scrap for consumption (home production plus purchases) in February totaled 6,020 thousand gross tons, a decrease of 8 percent from January. Home scrap amounted for 3,343 thousand tons and purchases 2,677 thousand tons; of the purchases, 84 percent was received from dealers and 16 percent from other sources. Domestic stocks of ferrous scrap held by consumers at the end of February totaled 6,520 thousand gross tons, and stocks of pig iron held by consumers and suppliers totaled 2,002 thousand tons, each decreasing slightly from December. Mines Produce Increase In Total Daily Production -c By John Prentice 6c Fred Dickenson higher than in January in the southeastern Missouri Lead Belt e and slighly lowe in the district. j Tri-Stat- The Western States produced 15,800 tons of recoverable lead in February compared with 16,700 tons in January. Idaho and Utah, the principal producing States, recorded monthly declines of 8 and 9 percent, respectively, but their daily average production rates showed little change. Colorados output showed virtually no change, and there were monthly increases of 4 precent in Montana, 5 percent in Arizona, and 9 percent in Washingto. The substantial increase in the daily average production rate in Washington was due to higher lead content of ore hoisted at the Pend Oreille mine, the States principal lead producer. Changes in output of the States producing less than 1,000 tons of recoverable lead during ithe month were not lead-zin- c significant. Marks, Salinas, Calif., and St. McMurrin Wulffenstein, George. The two men, who hold 19 claims in the Grapevine Wash area near the old town of Silver Reef, reported that they have uncovered five good areas. Assays have ranged from .50 per cent to . per cent with a silver content running as high as 110 ounces per ton. 7 They plan to begin mining operations soon as well as do additional exploration work for copper and silver.
